89 GMC Sierra lacks power

I'm looking at buying a 1989 Sierra 1500 4WD with a 5.7 TBI. This particular truck was well maintained, 1 owner and has 95k original miles on it.

I've driven a few of these recently and owned an 87 in the past.

This truck seems to be lathargic, it doesn't have the out of the hole acceleration that the others I've driven had.

It doesn't run bad, just real sluggish especially from a stop.

I'm not sure what gear ratios it has, this could be an issue. Wheels are the original 15".

Owner has to get vehicle smogged before I will purchase.

My only thought would be the catalytic converter possibly clogged or maybe an EGR valve issue.

Any one have any ideas?

Thank you

Re: 89 GMC Sierra lacks power

Welcome to AF. This can be caused by timing, gearing, trans, many things in the mix, this would need to be checked out by a tech to determine if it is normal for this truck or there is a problelm, no magic bullet here.
