Has My Clutch Gone Out?

Hey guys, I started my day normally until I went to the garage to start my car. Upon entering the car, I noticed the clutch was feeling a bit strange. Disregarding this, I started my car and attempted to back out of the garage until I noticed I was unable to put my car into any gear.

The shifter goes through the gears without any problems while the car is off, but not while running, thus leading me to believe the clutch is to blame. I've also noticed the clutch feeling different for quite some time, though I shrugged it off as my own paranoia.

What do you guys think? The car is about nine years old with 56k miles.

Re: Has My Clutch Gone Out?

Since you posted in a general forum (not vehicle specific) it would help if we were informed of the vehicle year, make and model. But, then it may also make more sense to post in the vehicle-specific forum as others may have encountered exactly the same symptoms on that same car and know what it takes to fix it.

Does your car has a hydraulic or manual/cable clutch? If hydraulic, it may need to be bled or the clutch master cylinder may be failing. If manual, the cable may need to be adjusted.

Thank you, I never thought of that. I'm new to the forum so you'll have to forgive me.

No worries, and welcome to AF

What model car is it?

It does sound like either the clutch needs adjusting, or if it's a hydraulic one, something has failed.

Looks like it's a 2002 Elantra. The new thread can be found here..

Re: Has My Clutch Gone Out?

Inspect the HYDRAULIC clutch slave cylinder. Replace it if you see fluid at the rubber boot.
