Re: acrylic clear coat over CF hood

I have never had a problem clear coating ANY decals with Testors high gloss and Tamiya Clear. neither react negatively in my experience with any decals, including, but not limited to SMS, SAS, Studio 27 and Model Master CF decals.

I think that (from my experience) you have to be careful when spraying over decals that are LIGHT colored over DARK surface. When I sprayed one of my kits I think i put a little to much, nothing was damaged except the the big white "canon" that was over red paint. it did not bubble or anything but the white area turn semi transparent in some areas. The rest was red decal over a white surface and no damage was noticed.

It was a very thin studio 27 decal sheet and I used Tamiya spray.

Re: acrylic clear coat over CF hood

I havent used acrylic on SMS carbon yet but ive had pretty good luck using Future floor wax on SMS. check out my RX-8 for the results. the link is in my sig. Cool thing about it is you can polish it with rubbing compound like tamiya's and it gives a pretty nice shine. Con is you need an airbrush on hand.

Your RX-8 looks hot, man! I have an airbrush, but Future is not officially sold in Germany. A guy solds it @ ebay but he charges a very high price

I actually only recommend doing this on CF hoods and not the whole cars, which is perfect in your case. In my opinion, it gives the same shine real CF hoods have. Ill admit Future is shiny, but I do not think it will ever be as perfect shiny as a TS-Clear-coat for example. If you look at real CF hoods they are never as shiny as the clear coat on the car. I also do not think you can sand it down with with the polishing kit (never tried though), like I said earlier, just use Rubbing compound a few times and you will have to put shades on just to look at your hood.
Another good place to Future would be the CF backs on racing seats, adds a c l touch IMO.

Good luck finding it,
JeFF

BTW: what kind of Project are you planning to use this application.

Re: acrylic clear coat over CF hood

Snooker, Future is nothing overly special (as I thought it was when I first heard of it), it's just a type of floor cleaner/shiner. I believe a comparable product is sold in Germany, just not under the name Future.

Check this link out, it has names of similar products:

Cheers,
Mark

I'll clear the CF hood of my R32 Skyline.

@ Captain Mark: Thanks for the link, now I know where to buy it.

I believe Future is also known as Johnsons Klear. Thats what it is called in the UK anyway.

You do not have to apply it by airbrush by the way. Future has fantastic self levelling qualities and will NOT leave brush strokes. You have to watch it though because it does tend to pool in places. I have obtained perfect results using brushs, cotton buds(q-tips) and dipping(yes, dipping!)

In fact I have found that dipping the parts in future produces the glossiest finish, especially on old clear parts and carbon fibre.

Cheers

Re: acrylic clear coat over CF hood

proud Team Hybrid member since 99. Jason's thinking of selling the benz for a porsche soon, he might have actually done it already, havent seen the crew in a while.

sorry for going OT guys, but back on topic.
FKouch: thanks for the tip, i never tried handbrushing it. would have saved me loads of time not airbrushing it on the back of my seats CF parts.
