noise when engine is on and on AM FM is great

When the radio is on AM in my 1995 Yukon I get nothing but engine noise. The FM is perfect any suggestions as to what is wrong?

Just purchased the vehicle but it does have the TV/VCR in the back. Sound comes out of the TV speakers not the car stereo. I have checked the antenna cable and it appears to be connected and no cuts or breaks. If I turn the vehicle off the AM is perfect so I know the radio works and antenna but it is just when the engine is running that I hear all the static.

they used to make a nosie suppressor (capacitor) that you put on your distributor for this. AM is susceptible to that type of radiated noise by the nature of what it is.

Could just be a bad ground wire

engine noise is often caused by a distributer or coil, and sometiems an alternator. Like PaulD said check the condensor. (the auto industry calls capicitors condensors.)

Engine noise is also caused by a simple bad ground or connection. If it was me I would check the simple things first.Just a suggestion

You have to remember that AM picks up different fequencys than FM so it might be picking up on the frequency that the engine electrical system runs at. Like paul said look around for a noise suppressor it should help but it might not completely fix the problem.

Don't ever look at cars as just imports or domestics. Just because a car is made in a certain country doesn't mean that it is anything like another car from that country. An example of this is Mitsubishi reliability, just because they are Japanese doesn't mean that they are as reliable as a Honda or Toyota.
