Question 2001 4.0 ranger burning smell

Hey last night I took my new ranger for a drive, I noticed as I got on the freeway on ramp and accelerated there was a burning or hot smell coming from my heater. It stopped after a couple of minutes of freeway driving. Then when I got home I tok it in the fields behind my house and ended up having to use the 4x4, when I got home and got out I noticed a burning smell near the front drivers side tire I popped the hood and looked around and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Has anyone else had this happen, or know what the problem could be?

Welcome to the Automotive Forums!

Any chance you have a dragging caliper?

Feel each wheel and it should be warm, if it's hot to the touch you've found a dragging brake.

Best regards,

Oscar.

thanks for the tip but that wasn't the case, any other ideas? Also I have a airbag like in my dash that flashes on and off intermittently

There is a recall for many ford vehicles on the Brake Pressure Switch, did you get it done already? If not, then I would inspect it immediately as fluid leaking into the switch can cause a short circuit and start a fire. It is located ver close to the brake fluid reservoir. you can google it so you know how it looks like.

The airbag light can be many things from a bad clockspring, bad crash sensor or a bad wiring, also a short in the electrical system can cause lots of electrical gremlins, did the light started at the same time as the burning smell?

If it is equipped with a cruise control system, is it working? If not then you have a bad switch.

Here's a link with information about it:

Best regards,

Oscar.

Re: 2001 4.0 ranger burning smell

By the way, is the airbag flashing in an apparent pattern? for example:

ON,OFF,ON,OFF,ON,OFF - PAUSE - ON,OFF,ONOFF - PAUSE - STAYS ON

If so count the number of flashes before and after pause in the example above it indicates 3 flashes, pause two flashes indicating DTC 32 (just an example)

Re: 2001 4.0 ranger burning smell

My other truck (2002 Ranger XLT with 4x4 and 4.0) would occasionally have a slight burning funk like you're talking about. I liked that truck, but ended up in a freak wreck, which was all me. Never found what was hot though
