Say you have an occasional driver and you put 3K miles on it a year. How often do you change your oil?

My inclination is to change it every 6 months, during which 1500 miles have usually gone by since the last oil change. Am I being paranoid?

Every owners manual and repair manual I've ever looked through lists a certain amount of mileage (3000, 4500, 6000, or 7500 miles), and says every 6 months; and to do the change whichever come first. So if you don't hit the mileage, changing it every 6 months would be perfect.

Most of the cars I've had required an oil change once per year if not driven much. That's what I do with my 66 year old Chevrolet as well - It's only driven a few hundred miles each year.

Wow. Changing oil every 6 months on only 1500miles? That sounds like alot of overkill. The old "every 3,000 miles" is a very old myth. Motor oils have come a long way since then.

Yes the 3000 mile change is more of a myth than anything, however oil does get contaminated and can turn acidic from age alone.

I normally change my oil every 5000 miles. I got a new job and my current drive to work is only 4 miles. The car is only likely to get around 4000-5000 miles a year put on it now. Since it is a daily driver I will probably do the oil change every 6 months.

Being the car in question by the OP is only an occasional driver I would say changing it once a year would be sufficient.
