Scratching/ Pulsing Brakes 1993 Grand Am
Had problem with ABS light coming on each time brake was pushed.
Master cyclinder was replaced, now brake light never comes on. Not sure it if interfaces with computer. Mechanic says its only the light. Sometimes - Scratching noises on fire wall side of brade petal. Scratching noise sometimes when you just start the car and do not touch the brake petal. Also, as you stop, below 5 mile per hour, brake pulses, petal drops and brakes begins to lock. Replaced hydrolic power boost. - No change, althought mechanic originally said it fixed the problem. GM says replace rear drums and brakes. Although they looked okay, I did that. It was better for almost two months. Replaced front pads, and resurfaced discs. Replaced calipers. Mechanic nows replaced something else, ABS boost of somekind. Still have scratching behind fire wall and pulsing brake petal. Someone says the master cyclinder was probably bad from the start. Does anyone know what this problem is, and how to correct it? After the mechanic having the car for 8 weeks, and I having it back for one day, its going back. Why wife is afraid to be in the car. |

Re: Scratching/ Pulsing Brakes 1993 Grand Am
i have pulsing brakes in my 94 grand am as well. im going to replace rotors and pads to see if that helps. My drum brakes seem to lock up too, but that may be becuase the tires have barely legal tread. Any help from anyone else would be greatly appreciated. is replacing rotors and pads worth it. i just changed fluid too, would air in lines cause that????

I found this out the hard way.
When you replace rotors and brakes you have to clean and smooth where the rotors press against in the rim and around the posts so you dont get vibrations and scraping sounds. It takes lots of work but its worth it when its nice and quiet. |

The tread on your tires isnt going to affect your drum brakes , your cable is sticking or the brake line is stuck or even a bearing is seazed in the wheel.

Re: Scratching/ Pulsing Brakes 1993 Grand Am
Mine started to do the same thing your car is doing, evidentily, it was a wheel speed sensor starting to go bad. Once it finally went bad the ABS light stayed on. What you might want to do is hook up a scan tool and retrieve the codes as it happens, this will tell you whats wrong with it...

Thanks for the help. Where is a wheel speed sensor located? Is it hard to replace, and how much do they run for? What about air in the lines, because im not completely sure that its all out from when i changed fluid.
