E 150 Starter problem

I have an excellent running 2006 E-150 Cargo Van with 40,000 miles on it.

Until recently it would start up immediately when I turned the key. But for the past month or so it sometimes does not start immediately - - sometimes I have to keep cranking the starter as I pump the gas pedal two or three times - - then it starts up and runs fine. This starting problem, prolonged cranking of the starter and pumping of the gas pedal, is becoming increasingly necessary to start the van. But once it starts it runs great.
I would greatly appreciate any ideas you might have as to how I can make my van start as it used to immediately upon turning the key.
I’ve changed the air cleaner, the fuel filter already..
Thanks for your help,
Nick Lee

Re: E 150 Starter problem

I would start by checking the fuel pressure. Start with the gas filter then disconnect the fuel line before the external fuel pump. Use a metal can like a coffee can. Have somebody else try to start the truck just make sure the primer pump is working.
http://www.autopart.com/tools/toolsmain/tool/T_3440.htm This is a picture of a pressure tester. If slightly low check the vacuum hose for the pressure regulator. If you find gas replace it otherwise pinch off the return hose if the pressure is satisfactory at this point replace the regulator.
Some of the newer units have a damper instead of a pressure regulator. The control pump voltage by cycling the fuel pump ground and have a pressure switch. Make sure what you have before changing parts.

I doubt if you have two pumps on this van the older ones did but I think you only have an in tank pump. I was thinking 1966 not 2006.
