Changed hub and now loud grinding noise

I was working on a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am with a 3.4.I changed the passenger side wheel bearing because there was a slight noise (the noise the bearing makes when it needs to be changed :-p). I took everything off, and took the axel nut off, and tried pushing the shaft out of the bearing so I could take the hub off. The shaft was actually stuck in there so I just hit the end of it with a hammer and it came right out. When I tried to put the hub back on, the shaft was pushing it out. So I held the hub in there and started to put the screws in there and it started to pull the hub in the shaft was in there just fine. I put the axel nut on there (without a torque wrench) really tight. When I was pushing on the shaft it sounded like air was coming out of it ( I don't know if this is suppose ot happen). Once the hub was all tightened down, I put the rotor on hub and then put the caliper bracket on. Once that was done I put the caliper on itself and put the pads in there. This caliper is different than the ones I am used to, there is a top sliding pin that you can put in and then push the caliper onto the bracket and just tighten the bottom pin. Well I loosened the top one to get the bottom one to line up, and then tightened both of the pins down really tight. You can't push the caliper back and forth now (I don't know if this is suppose ot happen, I thought it was suppose to be able to slide if you pushed it). Once I was done with that I put the tire on it and I took it for a test drive. This car does not have a backing plate on it.

When I was driving it, it sounded like a really loud grinding noise/rubbing noise. It kinda smells like something is rubbing or burning and I don't know what it is. The brakes work fine, turning works fine, everything is working fine as I can tell. There is no probelms besidess the noise.

Do you any of you guys have any ideas on how to fix this or to get it to stop doing this? I am up to any suggestions, I just drove it 15 minutes going 60 and it seems like the noise is getting worse but it seems to be working fine. I just need to make sure the car is safe, and I need some ideas so I can fix it tomorrow! It needs to pass inspection! Any help would be appreciated!

And I did put the car on a jack and pull on the wheel you couldn't pull on it so that's okay. I wasn't sure if like the shaft or the steering knuckle was rubbing on the back of hub or something? If it is the steering knuckle how do I make sure that it is in the correct spot?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks for any help you guys can offer!

Did you torque the axle nut properly? You said you put it on really tight. Was that more than the torque spec. calls for?

No backing plate? The plate is there to hold the ABS harness in place.....some cars that don't have ABS, still have the backing plate....may even have a hub with a sensor, even if it doesn't have ABS.....

As for the caliper, it should effortlessly slide on those pins.......however, if you reversed the pads( a no-no), you will have a hard time putting the caliper on.....and sliding it.......

When I do a hub, suspend the caliper, remove the bracket, pads, and rotor.....remove axle nut.....drive the axle stub back, just to loosen it from the hub.......remove the 3 bolts and then the hub assembly.....there is usually a backing plate between hub and knuckle.....is there one on the other side(may have been replaced before and not put back on)?

What kind of hub was used? A good new one, or an el cheapo?

I whizz the knuckle surface.......I wire brush the gooves of the axle stub.....and I whizz the back of the rotor hub surface......now I reassemble......and torque the axle nut.....
