Reprogram Toyota 4runner remote!!!

open drivers side door
stick the key in the ignition then pull it out
lock and unlock the door 5 times
shut and then open the door
lock and unlock the door 5 times
stick the key in the ignition and turn to on then off then on then off
pull the key out of the ignition
you should hear the door locks go clunk clunk
press the two top buttons on the remote for 1 second
then press the unlock button by itself for 1 second then repeat the pressing process for the second remote.

LOL thats not funny lock unlock lock unlock doh !

that does not work to set up a new remote you need to follow these instructions
First, some background info. You will need to find the ECU for the
alarm/keyless RS3000 system. Mine is under the drivers seat. Looking
at the side with the connectors on it, there is a small button or hole
on the right-hand side. you will need to press the button or insert a
paper clip into the hole to press the switch inside, following the
instructions below. The Status Monitor is the the Red LED light on the
dash that says "security" under it. This procedure seems quite simple,
although the manual still advises one to contact a dealer to do it. It
sure isn't worth $76! Be sure that you follow the procedure exactly or
there is a chance that you might mess up the programming of the
original remote. If that happens, just follow the procedure again to
add the remote back to the system.

1. Insert key into the ignition switch and turn to "ON".

2. Press and hold the ECU's programming switch for 3 seconds.
The Status Monitor LED turns on for 5 seconds.

YOU MUST PERFORM THE NEXT STEP WITHIN 5 SECONDS!

3. Press and release the remote control's top or bottom button
(whichever one you want to operate the system).
The Status Monitor LED turns off.
The Piezo "chirper" chirps once.
The exterior lights flash once.

4. Turn off the ignition. The ECU will now operate with the remote
just programmed.
this didnt work for me because i have a 97 4runner but those are the instructions for 98-02 4runner i still need to a keyless remote for 97 4runner :-( good luck :-)

Has anyone tried this. I have a 98 4runner limited but dont see anything except for the seat motor underneat the drivers seat! I don't think my 4runner has an alarm system, but i know it has keyless entry (we bought it used). Unless it comes standard with an alarm system...

Where would the ECU be for this? i cant find it on the wiring diagrams i have...

Re: How do i reprogram 1998 4-runner entry remote?

4Runner Instructions

I have a 1999 4Runner and I followed the directions above (which I've copied below) with one exception. In step 8 -- I held the lock button instead of the unlock button in order for the directions to work.

Step 1 - open drivers side door and get in your vehicle.

Step 2 - put key completely into ignition, then pull out.

Step 3- with door open, lock and unlock 5 times on door console (ten clicks total).

Step 4 - close door then open door.

Step 5 - lock and unlock 5 times on door console (ten clicks total).

Step 6 - put key completely into ignition then turn to the on position then pull key out (you will now hear the door locks lock then unlock a couple of times)

Step 7 - now quickly press the lock and unlock buttons at the same time only for about a second.

Step 8 - then quickly press the lock (or unlock) button for just a second.

Step 9 - exit car and close the door

After you do this you should hear a beep then your lights will flash. This will indicate that your remote is programmed to your vehicle.

Alarm reset

I have a 1997 4Runner with the control unit strapped to the floor under the drivers seat with a black plastic wire tie. I released the plastic strap and followed those instructions by pressing the button on the control module. Worked fine

Try this web site: http://www.4runners.org/articles/rs3000/

It has reprogramming directions, and (most interesting to me) links to a pdf version of the 27 page (!!) owner's manual for the security system.

My used 98 4Runner had the owner's manual, but there was nothing about the security system. This document was very interesting and useful!!

Good luck!

Re: How do i reprogram 1998 4-runner entry remote?

Hello, I have a 97 4Runner limited and purchased a remote from ebay. The original is black and the new one is gray, will this make a difference???
The numbers on the back match and I have tried several combinations of programing but can't get the remote to work.
I hear that their are several different ways to program one. Does anyone have the programing for a 97 4Runner?
Thanks.

Re: How do i reprogram 1998 4-runner entry remote?

I have an SR5 1998 4Runner. Today I purchased a keyless remote from the Toyota Dealership. This is all I did to program the remote
1. Put the key to the On position
2. Located the Security Box under the drivers seat
3. In the back of the box was a recessed green button.
4. I used a paper clip to push the green button in and pressed the top part of my remote which clicked.
5. I got out of the car, closed the door and used the remote. It works fine.
It took about 3 seconds

Thank you for your post. I bought a new keyless remote from Vacaville Toyota for my 1998 4 Runner SR5. Requested them to program for me. Cost $150.00. They used to do free for me before but not now. Googled how to do it and got Anthonypaul2's post from 05-14-2015. Took me a few secs and worked great. Thank you Anthony.
