I like to use Tamiya Metal Primer before laying down my main primer. It's clear and has a chemical reaction with the metal that helps it adhere to photo-etch, white metal and wire. I even decant some from the can into a small paint jar for brushing onto little parts. If you decant into a jar make sure the propellant has finished outgassing before tightening the lid (24 hours) so you don't risk an explosion.

When I first started building metal kits I didn't know about this undercoating and some of my paint jobs started flaking off.

Not sure how readily available the clear metal primer from Tamiya is, the last few times I've tried to get it I have been told it's 'discontinued'. Tamiya does have a gray metal and plastic primer which works fine thought.

I've always used Automotive Self Etching Primer. its a fraction of the cost of Tamiya Metal Primer down this neck of the woods
