Transmission Problem

I just purchased a 2009 cobalt xfe w/ 5 spd manual trans about 2 months ago and have only put about 900 miles on it. About a month ago i started having a problem when starting off in first gear sometimes the car will kick back into neutral with a loud thud. I brought it back to the dealer only to have them tell me that nothing is wrong with it. Like I said, it only happens maybe once or twice during a drive, and it doesnt happen every time i drive somewhere. So even though it didn't happen when the mechanic test drove it, there is still obviously something wrong w/ it. Will this problem get worse over time?

Re: Transmission Problem

shouldn't kick out of gear obviously... try figure out what your doin when it does this.. so you can "recreate" it for the mechanic... for example.. it does this when you start on a hill? or after you downshift into first gear? just so you can actually show them what when an how it happens...

Re: Transmission Problem

your first gear sinchronizer is gone well thats what i think but kind of weird cuz thats a new car but try aasking the dealer for check up on this one

how it works:If the teeth,(the teeth (2) spin not in the same speed) make contact with the gear, the teeth will fail to engage and a loud grinding sound will be heard as they clatter together. For this reason, a modern dog clutch has a synchronizer mechanism or synchromesh, which consists of a cone clutch and blocking ring. Before the teeth can engage, the cone clutch engages first which brings the selector and gear to the same speed using friction. hope i helped

Re: Transmission Problem

If it suddenly kicks out gear after you have shifted and fully engaged the gear, I believe that's a different problem than the syncro-gear as described. If you're having trouble getting it into the gear, then there could be a problem with the syncro-gear.

Popping out of gear is a saftey issue and should properly dealt with. As stated, become better equiped to explain what it takes to make the problem happen, so your mechanic will be more likely to witness the problem.

Make sure to document the reason for your prior visit to the dealer, in case the problem is not diagnosed until after the warrenty expires.
