Revell/GearZ National Model Car Championships!

REVELL & STACEY DAVID’s GearZ® ANNOUNCE
NATIONAL MODEL CAR CHAMPIONSHIPS¬
Revell Joins Popular SPEED Channel Series to ‘Reinvigorate’ the Hobby

NASHVILLE, TN -- When he’s not building a full-size vehicle on the set of his hit SPEED Channel series, editing video footage, doing voiceovers, or deciding what to create next, GearZ host and executive producer, Stacey David, can often be found working on a model car.

As a way to relax while still maintaining his creative edge, Stacey has been a hobbyist as long or longer than he’s been fixing and modifying real cars. Starting his fifth season of GearZ this Fall, David previously hosted and produced another popular automotive series on Spike TV for eight years.

Together with GearZ, Illinois-based Revell Inc. will conduct the inaugural Revell/GearZ National Model Car Championships. With the help of some 2,000 hobby shops and retailers, participants will be able to enter online or go to their local hobby shop to pick up an entry form and mail in photos of their models.

In addition to awards and valuable prizes from Revell, Testors, Coast Airbrush and Iwata, the model car magazines, and GearZ, the winners in each category will be recognized along with images of their models shown on an episode of Stacey David’s GearZ®.

Asked how today’s youth could be inspired and their interest in cars revitalized, David said, “We wanted to do something to spark their imagination, get them to use their hands and actually build something, and models seemed to be the perfect place to start. This contest will provide them with an incentive, along with bringing guys my age and older back into the hobby.” “Revell is excited for the genuine partnership with Stacey David and GearZ to expose kids to the fun in building a scale model automobile kit," said Rick Haas, director of marketing for Revell, Inc. "It is also a fantastic opportunity to encourage those former “baby boomer” model builders to build a kit with their kids or grandkids since we even have a competition class for novice builders."

The contest period for the Revell/GearZ National Model Car Championships is from January 15, 2011, through May 15, 2011. The Hot Rod theme coincides with many of the vehicles built on GearZ, and with a number of new Revell releases. Complete rules are available at hobby specialists nationwide, online at www.Revell.com or www.gearztv.com. This promotion, a skill contest and not a sweepstakes, requires the purchase of one Revell or Monogram kit from a range of kits in order to qualify.

Re: Revell/GearZ National Model Car Championships!

Couldn't find anything on either site...does it have to follow the theme, or is it any Revell product?

The reason why everything isn't posted yet on Revell.com and Gearztv.com is because the contest was just announced at iHobby and SEMA, and it doesn't start until January 15th. However, for you modeling 'insiders', I wanted to give you a heads up, and maybe we'll see some awe-inspiring creations by the end of the contest period. KEEP YOUR RECEIPT when you purchase one of these 'base' kits, as it will be needed as a proof of purchase.

If a model car contest was ever televised nationwide, it had to be well before
I was born, because I never heard of anything like this before. Lots of others have told me that they wanted to do a similar sort of contest, and a few even managed to get it in front of the model manufacturers, but they were unable to make it happen. We are hoping the contest is embraced by tens of thousands of modelers, as it will allow us to continue staging and improving this event indefinitely.

Here are all the official rules:

Re: Revell/GearZ National Model Car Championships!

The local hobby shop in my town decided to host a Revell model car contest back in the mid '60s so I entered a '58 Impala. I won the city-wide contest so shop owner sent my car to LA for the 'Revell- Testor Second National Custom Car Contest'. I was lucky enough to win the contest in the Junior Division. My car came back in one piece packed in popcorn, I mean, real popcorn, lol, not the foam stuff.

The next year I modified a Ford Falcon, chopping off the roof and molding out the front grill for a futuristic look. Won again locally, car went out to LA, and I won again, in the Third National in the Junior Division.

I dont have the models today, but I do have the trophies. Plaque fell off the first trophy and was lost:

Re: Revell/GearZ National Model Car Championships!

Thanks for sharing. A local man built a MPC national contest winner. I got to see the model in it rough un-restored condition. A national contest is a good thing for the hobby and will hopefully continue with different types of cars featured in the future.
