GTO vs. Trans Am

I want to know which car is more popular. I like the Trans Am but don't know much about the GTO. However, the GTO is what started it all.

Re: GTO vs. Trans Am

Today, it's a hard question to answer. Do you mean Trans Ams when GTOs were still available? GTO, hands down. Or do you mean for the 30 years they DIDN'T make GTO, and Trans Am was the best performance car on market?
If you look at what's being restored or pumped up today, GTO still gets the nod. And, it's pretty hard to argue with the quality and performance of the '64-'72 A-Body, especially the Pontiac.

I'm talking about the '60s and '70s when GTOs were made.

Re: GTO vs. Trans Am

Comparing late '60s and early 70s GTOs vs. T/As, I would have to give the nod to the Trans Am's - especially the convertibles.

Re: GTO vs. Trans Am

Firebird in the late '60s was saddled with corporate politics, and the same engines in the A body made more power than those in the F body. The carb was the only REAL difference. Firebirds had a limiter to keep the throttle from openning all the way. A little trick, and they run the same!
But the GTO had class no other performance car of the era had, including the Firebird. And the A body is a MUCH tougher platform for a high horsepower engine. Not many 10 second F-bodies with stock rear suspension., MANY A bodies, including GTO.
For a pure "road car", Firebird wins, especially the mid '70s cars. Not many cars ever made handle as well, and still offer drivability.

Re: GTO vs. Trans Am

The Firebirds had a compromised rear suspension. Those leaf springs made for slightly more trunk and back seat space in an otherwise pretty low platform. But high horsepower and lots of tire make a live axle and leaf springs to the funky chicken; axle tramp, wheel hop and unintentional rear wheel steering. The 4 link A-body set up was better.

GTO'S....Hand's DOWN!!

My dad has a 1965 Pontiac GTO. Tripple Black Convertible with a 389 Tri-Power, 2 speed automatic(it still gets up and moves) and its just as sweet as possible...we've won so many car shows with it its not even funny anymore. people started to hate us once they saw us pull up to the show in the SWEET GOAT!!! you can check out some pictures of it at http://www.themusclecar.com/images/GTO/ and you can just click on them 4 pictuers.

So my anwnser is that GTO's are without a doubt the best musclecar out there, it was a big milestone in the musclecar era and if it wasnt for the GOAT, who knows...their might not have ever been a MUSCLE CAR!!!!
