Message Center lights out

my 2006 message center light won't light up. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to take the dash apart so I can check connections. Ford says it's a big deal cause the odometer is part of it and the whole thing needs to be replaced at a cost of approx. $1000 dollars. I could not care except I need to have an odometer to know when to service things. Thanks, Rick.
