Whining When Turning

Folks, I know, I should search. And I did and got just about every answer I can think of. But my son is in a bind.

2007 CRV

He is about 750 miles from home. A week or so ago he started to notice a whining noise when turning. And he thinks more so when turning left.

He was planning to return two days from now. He took it to a shop last week and they said, no problem, $40/$50 to fix, bring it in Tuesday (today....like were they putting him against the wall?). Today they say $600.00.

Bottom line, is there a risk in driving 750 miles home?
Is there anything else to try.
Fluid is full. One hose was replaced two years ago.

Thanks in Advance

Re: Whining When Turning

Worste case scenerio it the power steering pump siezes and he burns up the belt on the highway. Not a life threatening scenerio but could be expensive concidering tow and repair. I have had a power steering pump whine on my 01 dodge caravan for the past 2 years with no other problems I think he can get it home just fine because highway driving doesnt put alot of stress on the power steering system.

Re: Whining When Turning

Thanks.
That is about what I figured.
But I had not considered the seize up.

I'll tell him to be sensitive to that and shut down ASAP.

But I concur, low probability.

Thanks again.

Re: Whining When Turning

I'd keep some extra fluid on board in case he notices that it gets worse. It would suck to be stranded and need a tow when all you needed was a quart or two of fluid to get you to a safe spot.
