Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K
Hi Sean
Looking very nice! As for scratches and stuff on the bottom. I think you should head towards the damage flying stones would make ( you'll find pictures for that on 917s no problem ). I don't think there would be scratches like on an F1 skid plank from bottoming as those cars ran higher off the ground.... Keep it up! |

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K
Thank you so much for showing us your progress. Seeing the paint job, I guess, you won´t be using the orange-decals at all?
Your progress looks really promising. Keep it up.

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K
a little further progress...
I have still got my 'auto electrician' hat on and carrying on with the wiring for the firewall between driver and engine, for the cabling I used a mixture of MFH cord (0.4mm & 0.3mm) The two new holes behind the drivers seat are for the twin Bosch coils, I will be scratching these and have made a start below, there are a couple of further additions left for this section including the battery which I have built up from scratch (the kit one is not the best), also to add are a couple of latches for the doors and finally the window. more to come soon again and thanks for following.

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K
Hello,
I really like the wiring you made, as your new coils! One thing: If you want to make a vintage racer, the battery as to be in the engine compartment, not inside the cockpit. But if you want to make the car as it races today, then it is OK. Keep on with the fantastic work you make! Cheers, Jamme

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K
battery done...
... and what it looks like in the cockpit, only left to add the + & - red and black leads and then its done. I built this up entirely from bits in from the spares box and just added a couple of steel rod ends for connectors. The cockpit is starting to look busy now as it should, it will be a shame to attach the smaller passenger seat which will hide most of this detail. now for that window, hmmm...

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K
Everything is as great as we have come to expecty but that battey slays me!!
What is the "perforated" battery case made of? Did you drill styrene or is it something else?

yes, Tamiya's thinnest styrene sheet and then drilled, I find it helpful to lay a ruler down and then measure out each hole using a pin prick. The next time I build a piece I will do a mini 'how to' although its dead easy! :-)

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K
Looking Fantastic Sean, drives home just how far I have to go with mine!
Jamme, interesting regarding the battery position, can you go into more detail? Like where in the engine bay? When and why was it moved? Was it like that for all chassis? Pics? Also does anybody know if the bolt-on rollbar was always fitted or a later mod? I was wondering if I should add one it to mine, it looks cool but may not be authentic? Thanks. |

I have the same question too, I have gone through all my reference pictures and cannot find any pictures with the battery in the engine bay, all my ones show the battery in the cockpit, there is very little room in the engine bay too and I cannot imagine where it would be located, also in the film Lemans the battery is in the cockpit too - if you can help that would be great. another update coming shortly
