Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K
more progress...
added the exhausts to the motor, these are simply sprayed flat white, I laid down a coat of dark grey to begin with to add a little depth to the finish. Also added a little staining to the ends of each pipe using Tamiya's weathering set. I decided just to go with the etch part only for the exhaust support bracket - the actual piece in my ref pictures looks quite thin compared tot he plastic version in the kit, I weathered the etch part down with a little matt black wash. also completed work on the cage surrounding the engine, made the support 'triangular' sections from plascard, all thats left is to spray it semi gloss black and add a few details and nuts bolts etc. and a shot with the engine in place too... thanks again to one and all for the comments, hope you like the updates and see you all soon.

Great Job Sean, I like all the weathering you applied to give it such a sense of realism....

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K
more progress...
well after Phil went and built (and finished) his perfect 917 I almost threw this thing out of the bedroom window! anyway... I will still plug away and get it finished. So here's whats new... got the cage and engine in place, this took a while to get to sit in the right position but after alot of patience we finally got there. I still have alot of detailing planned for the frame and there are quite a few hoses which can still be added which is what I am on with now. bottom view... only added a slight amount of weathering at the front edges and a few chips underneath, used the Tamiya weathering sets for this (Im V. impressed with them too!) added the orage stripe to the top of the bodywork. and finally... after alot of headscratching and dry test fitting I think I may have come up with a working hinge for the doors. Im going to run with this and get theses sprayed up and detailed as I dont want to spend any longer playing about with these doors, fingers crossed it will work ok. Will keep you all posted!

Looking great!
(you have no reason to throw this out the window BTW )

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K
Hi Sean,
All coming together very nicely.Soon there will be 2 perfect Porsche 917's in the Completed section.Don't be throwing it out of the bedroom window,it's far too good for that. It's actually good to see how 2 different people tackle the same kit. Best regards, Steve. (or am I Sean and you Steve) I'm confused now. |

Re: WIP: 1970 'Gulf' Porsche 917K
more progress,
alot more of the details for the rear end have been added, both brake discs, rear lights, cooling ducts, fluid tanks and remaing framework. Gotta it has been really difficult to get it all looking square for some reason - not sure if Phil had the same problem. Its not perfect but at least it sits flat and looks straight-ish! I have also added lots of hoses and cables, there are several coming out of the rear of the transmission, an earth lead on the top of the trans and of course all the plumbing that goes with the tanks on one side of the engine. It looks like I am going to be able to have working doors afterall, these have been sprayed and attached and Im just waiting for everything to dry before doing anymore work on them. Just left with the fuel lines and a couple of other details on the other side of the engine, add the internal arches and complete the decals and then she's done. maybe one more update to come and then we should have a compelted thread, shouldnt be too long now... you guys must be sick of seeing the Porsche 917 by now. oh and decided on the next project... its gonna be the Carlos Sainz - Marlboro Toyoya Celica GT-4 Monte 91, Im gonna use the road kit by Tamiya and the Studio 27 transkit - cant wait to start that now! see you soon
