96 AXOD Trany problem
I have a 96 Sable Wagon, the Trany has had, it shakes real bad and is sliping (170k miles) I changed the front axles still shakes. The car is not worth the cost of new rebuild or a used one with the same miles. I've rebuilt engines before and a manual trany, could I rebuild my AXOD Trany with a kit on my own.

Re: 96 AXOD Trany problem
I have been told that it is not a good idea to rebuild the AXOD yourself. I am having problems with my '99 Sable (81,00 miles) and every tranny shop I have spoken with says that the casings of the AXOD's must be measured to see if there is any warpage in the housing, if there is, the tranny is junk. Ford offers re-man tranny's but they are very expensive. Your best bet is to find a transmission from a salvage yard that is in good working order. Do not purchase a transmission if it is out of the vehicle, you should be able to drive the donor vehicle at normal operating temperature to determine if it is in good mechanical condition. The AXOD is famous for operating fine while cold and then slipping or popping out of gear when hot.
