Roof Rack Addition

Just thought I would share an addition I just made. I took anothers idea and expanded on it. I made this using the lightest gauge steel and bolts, so no welding was needed. Plus, it only cost about $35!! I like it much better than having to throw stuff on the roof paint etc..

Thumbs up

That turned out nice...great work!

So, would you mind if I kinda borrowed that idea to some extent to replace my wimpy Basket Case? I already have the supports, but the Basket Case breaks apart easily.

:flash:

Looks nice. Is the rack itself steel? Only critique of it is that it isn't deep enough to hold anything.

I am going to update mine and use aluminum crossbars and clamps to hold the Nissan Basketcase.

Take it and run, I used anothers idea to get this done. I didn't really try to make it deep, I just wanted something that could protect my roof, has more places to strap things down and I could lock a tire onto when needed. One could probably lower it using a spacer under the u-bolts with no problem. Yes it is all light guage steel. aluminum was 4-5 times more expensive.
Post whatever else is made, I curious to see what else y'all are making..

Oh, credit is due, I think it was you rrdstar that gave me the idea in the first place.

I looked at it, and it would be easy to lower the rack about 1" with no problems, thats next...

That is what I am doing with custom brackets. the new brackets will lower the Basketcase to about 3/16" from the roof. Yes, I have the rubber strips on the roof to protect it if I overload the basket.

OK now the question is, can I easily buy the steel bars needed? Are they available as shown from Home Depot or Lowes?

For $35, this is the rack I'm looking for!

I just went to a local steel yard that sold bolts etc also, they had the steel, bolts and other hardware I needed. They even cut the bar to the lengths I needed for 50 cents a cut. All I had to do was drill, paint and screw together. It was pretty easy... I think I got about 38' of steel for about 5-7 dollars. Lowes and other places are much more expensive and carry the steel in 4' sections (you would cut a lot and waste a lot). A steel place has the steel in 20-25' lengths and can cut it for you. Hope this helps.

Post whatever you make!

A friend of mine has some left over pieces from his pool gate/fence. We are thinking about using those to make the rack. Looks like to bars you used are similar to what they use to make up the fence. Whenever we get around to it, I'll try to post the results.

Cool My revised roof rack

I changed from rusting muffler clamps to some billet aluminum clamps I machined. Painted black Hammerite of course. The cross tube is 3/4" aluminum tubing with heavy walls for support. It sits as low as possible since I have about a 1/2" clearance going into my garage!

Cool Nice work guys...

How did you cap the ends Travii? I like it.

Rick, do you have the cool spiderweb bungi thing for that basket? or are regular bungis better? I like the brackets. I may just have to see about making some that will accomodate a shovel or my Hi-Lift. Clean install.
