96' k/1500 305 Nothing will happen!!!!!

I have a 96' K/1500 305 that will not start. None of the lights will come on except for the center interior light. When the key is put into the ignition the chime will barley sound and when the key is turned nothing comes on. The only then that happens when the key is turned is the gear shift indicator lights up. This problem was eluded to by starting and the truck cutting off a couple seconds later and cutting off with no warning at intersections. I replaced the ignition switch thinking that was the problem but it did not fix. Also I checked the main fuse box and it is only getting around 6 volts, the same reading can be found at the ignition switch. What can be causing the main fuse box to only get 6 volts??? Please Help

The battery is good. 12.8 volts. Wires look good, ground looks good.

Is this with the key on or off? If off, turn the key on and check the battery voltage again. Then I would check all battery cables.

The problem is before the ignition switch and the battery is good. Reading 5-6 volts at the ignition switch. Why will the interior light come on or the chime sound with the key in? The chime is weak. If is was not getting a ground connection then the interior light would not work. Possible short in the main fuse box? How would I test for that?

I'm not sure what you have done to troubleshoot. Have you tried to jump start it?

with the headlights on what is the battery voltage using a voltmeter. IF the battery is 12 volts plus then check at the ignition switch what the voltage is. if you get 6volts here and 12volts at the battery then you must open up the fuse box and using a voltmeter find out where you have a bad / corroded connection.

so you follow that battery wire to the fuse box and see where the volts drop.

you had the battery load tested ? you removed cable connections and ground connections and cleaned correct ? if not then your guessing .

Makes me wonder sometimes. People get convinced that is something serious. When it turns into a simple fix, too embarrassed to post back.

perhaps a rodent chewed his neg. cable and when he opened the hood the squirrel attacked and the lacerations got infected and he developed a phobia of engine compartments but spent all his money on the medical bills from the squirrel attack and can't afford to take it to his merchanic.
