I have opwned a 951 since new...1988. Have run on many tracks in the northeast..thois car has been an extraordinary performer...well balanced..forgiving..amazing.

I have over 200,000 miles on this car..just returned from Watkins Glen...the best bargain in the Porsche stable

I myself am becoming quite the 944 guru, having owned a 1988 944 "S", 1986 944 Turbo (black), and currently a beautiful 2-owner unmolested 84k mile 1986 944 Turbo. The cars definitely have their strengths and weaknesses, and it's all really about whether you feel the car is right for you; these cars drive much differently from almost anything else I've ever driven. My father, a huge sports car enthusiast from the old school (imagine almost any 50's or 60's MG, Triumph, Lotus, or Austin Healey and there's a good chance he's owned it), likes the 951 but says that it feels about "twenty degrees away" from him. He means he doesn't connect with the car well, and I can easiliy see how that can be.

As for my 951, well, I love it of course. It gets stares from almost everyone, I've met about 10 awesome guys in the Milwaukee area who have them (2 of which are now very close friends, one even got me a job!), and it is a true performer through and through. Of course the maintaince schedule is almost a joke, but when you look at comparable Ferraris of the era (although even the 308 GTS doesn't live up to the performance level of the 951), it doesn't seem so bad.

I currently split use between two cars, a 1987 9000 turbo beater and the Porsche. I am a person who thinks the Porsche is NOT a daily driver; it wasn't sold with that intention in mind. Yea, yea, people go on talking about how some german in a magazine drove his 5 billion miles, fine. But even Porsche admits that the vast majority of cars they sell new are bought as a 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th car. This way maintaince isn't a major hinderance, since one can just fall back on another car when the Porsche breaks (this is not an "if" question here). That said, I will be using the 951 as a daily driver for about 3 months this year, simply because the Saab is on it's last legs and I just dumped all my cash into the 951 (I'm a college student). I will be applying for Hobbyist plates in 2006 when it becomes eligible.

Hope everyone with 951's is having good luck! It's awesome to see owners who are enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their cars, since it is this crowd that is keeping the 944 series of cars looking and running like new. Some are already collector's items by definition, and the first Turbos are about to hit the 20 mark as well. Sad, no, but the 951 is more and more becoming a novelty/pure enthusiast's car with their age and condition. Hold on to yours, the good ones are few and far between these days.

I loved my 89 951...Chipped with a test pipe it was amazing...
So solid still after all these years...
Yes, of course they need upkeep, but they are a great true performance bargin!

I love my 86 944 na as well and the 83 version was named THE best handling production car in the US at the time!

I get around 31 MPG highway and big grins around corners...Classic good looks...

But I still want & am looking for my next Turbo!

As a 951 owner, i can proudly say that it is one of the most underrated cars of all time. It's a little harsh for a daily driver, but all those thoughts go away when you hit the twisties

The 951 are really not that complicated cars...once you understand the basics.... The problem is 1/2 the guys who claim to know how to service most German cars have no idea, thus the customer pays for their lack of experience.... I rebuilt many 951's over the years and really if you spend the money with thought you could have a very nice car as well as fast for a reasonable budget... The problem is there are bunch of parts out there that the sellers claim is the newest and the best up grades when usually it's just a shinny expensive piece... with no real gain in hp ...
