2014 Impala stabiity and ABS lites

Returned from out of town trip and the car was working fine. Next morning backing out og garage I had stablity and ABS lites lit and reduced steering. Ran my analyzer on it and no codes. Parts stores analyzers probably cover more analysis than mine but they won't run one due to the corona virus. Any body have any ideas?

GM's are notorious for the ABS wires cracking/breaking around the control arm area. There are diagnostics you can do with a multimeter to check resistance on your ABS sensor. Its usually going to be a front one that fails/breaks.

My lack of stability warning has been on for about 60 years. No one pays attention to it any more.

Stealthee is correct, and there is likely a connector for each front wheel sensor harness near the inboard end of the lower control arm, and another right at the hub itself. That makes disconnection for testing even easier.



A resistance test should reveal between 1-3KΩ to indicate a good pickup coil in the wheel sensor. If you have a good means of spinning the wheel with the vehicle elevated, the sensor should produce around 500mV or higher AC voltage when the wheel is turned at an equivalent of 5-7 MPH road speed.

If the resistance test reveals an open (no continuity) it may be worthwhile to inspect the wire harness along the lower control arm and at the hub area for damage. Breaks in the wiring are common from twisting and motion, as Stealthee advised. They can actually be repaired and reinsulated depending on the location of damage.

If a resistance test reveals a resistance measurement within range but the sensor does not produce AC voltage with the hub turning, the sensor face may be contaminated or the reluctor ring (tone wheel) may be damaged.

Changing a sensor will require replacement of the wheel hub/bearing assemnbly.

Took the car to the garage this morning. Analyzer identified a magnetic strip fell of the left rear wheel. They said it needs a new hub assembly. Magnetic strip???

On the 2014 Impala the wheel sensor is molded to the end of the wires. The sensor is
then bolted to the hub assy. No handy connector to do troubleshooting. Other than that the wires are neatly layed out with no sharp bends or apparent damage.

The garage removed the bearing assy and replaced. Around the inside surface of the bearing assy is a magnetic strip. Part of the strip was gone causing all the excitement. The wheel The bearing was ok. only problem was the mag strip. The mag strip is providing the input to the wheel sensor.

The irony is I had a W body that had a bearing almost fall apart it was sp bad, but it never kicked the ABS light.
