i need transmission help!!!!

I was going down the road and my avenger suddenly seemed to bog down. When I took off from the stop light, it wouldnt shift out of 2nd . My transmission is automatic. When you turn the car off it will do fine untill you let off the gas, and then it will do the same thing. Reverse works fine.
Can anyone help?!!
Does the whole thing need to be replaced?

Re: i need transmission help!!!!

You are in limp-home mode. This happens when something goes wrong with the trans and shifting would cause damage. Take it to a dealer or a trans shop that knows how to work on electronic controlled transmission. A lot of the transmissions have an electronic problem and not a mechanical problem. Some trans shops don't know how to tell the diff, so they give you the $2000 rebuild and your trans still doesn't work. When the problem isn't electronic, 9 out of 10 times failure was caused by putting in the wrong type of fluid. If fluid was recently added or the fluid was changed, you may have your answer right quick.
