Sputter, Strong Gasoline Smell

98 Malibu. Started and pulled out of garage, the motor shook, loss of power. Idles fine in park or nuetral, shakes in gear. Engine light is now on. When I got out of the car, I smelled strong fresh gasoline smell.

Can repeat the whole thing, strong gas smell recurs each time, but I seen no leak.

Any ideas? By the way, I have about 130,000 miles on it.

I am having the exact same problem and I also have about 130k on the car. When I last checked the codes, it came up as P0420 which is catalyst below threshold (bank 1) and P0302 which is misfire in cylinder #2. I replaced the spark plug, O2 sensor, spark plug wire and fuel injector and cleaned the other injectors. It still does the same thing. Let me know if you figure anything out.

Re: Sputter, Strong Gasoline Smell

I had the same problem on my 2000 LS last week. Ended up being bad fuel and a clogged injector. My mechanic cleaned the plug on the #6 cylinder, rapped on the injector to clear the clog, and put some shop strength cleaner through it. It has ran fine since then. The mechanic said that there was a misfire on all cylinders at different times, but #6 was always misfiring.

Re: Sputter, Strong Gasoline Smell

I found out that cylinder #2 injector was stuck wide open so I replaced all 6 with Accel performance injectors #150617.
