Third engine in 80,000 miles

Hi, im new here and i have a 91 stealth r/t NA. I got it last summer and i found out it didnt have the original engine in it. So i found the records and it had been replaced at 73,000 miles and the engine only had 35,000 on it. Well a few weeks ago it started making noise at any rpm over 2k so i brought it in and i was told the crankshaft was bad and i needed a new engine. I guess they couldnt just replace the crankshaft because the labor would be a lot so i ordered a new engine and they are putting it in so i should get it back today. It is from japan and has about 30k miles on it. It was estimated at $2500 installed and everything so i was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else here. If so, what was the cause?

Just a noise? That was it? Nothing wasnt working, and the car ran fine? I've got a bad feeling that you may have just been scammed.

Re: Third engine in 80,000 miles

Sorry, i should have specified. It started making noise at 2k rpm and after 3k it revved slow and it really lacked power. Its an auto so when i let off the gas it wouldnt glide very good it was like there was a lot of friction it the motor. I thought it was the tranny but it turns out it wasnt. I just found that the engine is in but the front drive boots for the axles were bad so they are replacing those so i wont get it untill monday.

Re: Third engine in 80,000 miles

Sounds like you spun a bearing in that one. You honestly have no clue how many miles that engine actually had. The previous engine may have been damaged do to timing belt failure or something else. So it may be two completely different issues with why its on its 3rd engine already.

Re: Third engine in 80,000 miles

I just got the car back like an hour ago. Stealthee was right, it turns out it was a spun bearing. But the new engine runs good. I had been driving around for about an hour and i saw my friend on a road just out of town in his z24 w/intake & chip. I thought i might really get to try out my engine but he didnt want any fun (I wonder why .) I have to bring the car back in monday for the front axle boots though but then i will be done.

Check your post carefully before posting like that. He has the dohc. And the Z24 is a cavalier am I right(correct me if I am wrong) . He could beat a z24 cavalier with an auto dohc.

Re: Third engine in 80,000 miles

Me and my friend have talked about racing but we havent yet. He has CAI and a chip so with average or minimal gains he is putting out about 160hp at the crank. His car weighs somewhere around 2600 lbs i believe(correct me if im wrong.) I have intake so with minimal gains im getting about 230hp at the crank. My car also weighs 600 lbs more. He is 5speed i have auto but it will be a roll of somewhere between 30-35. I dont know when it will happen but it will sometime!

Re: Third engine in 80,000 miles

With your intake you now have about 211 crank hp. The DOHC never really was 222hp.

Wow, i heard they were overrated but i didnt know it was that much. Thanks for the heads up. My new engine is from japan out of a 3000gt so it has the extra horse power. J/K lol.

The entire 3s DOHC line up. The SOHC was actually underrated though. Theres a guy with a ATX SOHC that dynoed 145whp. Thats around 185 crank hp not the 164 they were rated at.

Re: Third engine in 80,000 miles

I have another question. I've heard that when the battery gets disconnected for a while the ecu has to like re-adapt to its surroundings, is this true? Cause yesterday it was kinda idling low and sometimes it would pull hard when i gave it gas and sometimes it wouldnt pull that hard. After driving it a while it started idling like normal and it was more consistent every time i hit the gas. So i was just wondering if you guys think it has to do with the ecu.
