Just bought a Saab 9000. May have heater core trouble!

I just bought a 1996 Saab 9000 from a private seller. My dad took it for a run and said that he noticed that when the heat is on, he can smell antifreeze, and he noticed that when the heat was on, it was fogging up the windows. ((he used to be a mechanic, and said that this was a tell tale sign of a coolant leak.)) But when he set it to a/c, the smell went away. He told me that there may be a a leak in the hoses, or it may be that the heater core is leaking, or is bad or whatever. I'm just looking for a second opinion from someone who has actually owned one of these vehicles, and may have had similar problems, and also to see if someone might know any other possible causes for the antifreeze/coolant leak/smell that is only noticable while the heat is on...

Also there is a large hose running from the radiator to, I believe it's the engine block, that is bloated and full of ((Possibly?)) coolant. Just wondering if this is normal. ((I know next to nothing about cars, so please forgive me for my lack of knowledge.))

Yes heater cores leaks are common in the 9000's they can be very small or big.
I have a 92 9000 that has that smell too but the leak is so small, but have a 96 9000 that I had to by pass the heater core.

The best thing on the hose's is to replace them all. For about $75.00 you can replace them all with hose clamps too. www.eeuroparts.com

Thank you for your reply, but I have found the issue. the plastic on the radiator, where one of the hoses clamps on had actually broken and was causing a small leak. I was able to fix the plastic piece and since then, the leak has stopped, and there is no more smell....But I have also noticed that my a/c doesn't exactly work. I've put about 4 cans of a/c rechard into it, and it still only pumps luke warm air when set to cold...And that's if I'm lucky....I'm wondering if my compressor is bad...((It seems to come on when I start putting in the recharge, but I haven't noticed it come on otherwise.))
