z4 hardtop?

Can anyone clairify for me the retro fit hardtop situation for a 2003 Z4? My dealership insists that the retro fit kit alone is not enough to put a hardtop on my Z4 as it's original invoice does not say it was equiped to have a hardtop added. It's production date was actually Dec. 2002 and my understanding is that the hardtops didn't actually come out untill 2005. I've had others tell me that the retro kit will make the hardtop fit any Z4. Anyone know the real story?
