Unhappy Shifter handle

hello.i have a problem ..99 saturn,4 cyl,5 sp tranny.while leaving a stop sign today,i shifted into 1st gear and my shifter came out?/apart?..anyways,it will not engage any gears and will turn in a circle..any ideas on what went wrong? and how to fix it,gotta have a ride to work!

Unreal! I have a 95 Sc2, 4cyl, 5-speed manual, and the exact same thing happened to me today. At least I was in a parking lot and not on the road, but yeah, same thing. Got in it, push on clutch and brake and started car. Went to shift into 1st, and pop! Now it's all loose and floppy. Same situation, gotta have this for an hour commute to work one way. What can be done in a hurry. All the local mechanics are booked for the next 2 weeks!!
