2.2L Engine - average life?

What is the average life of these 2.2L engines?

I thought they ran for 300 - 400,000kms...my buddy says "Wrong!" Do most people do rebuilds or buy new engines?

I have three Mazdas and friends who also have Mazdas...One of mine has 155,000, the other with over 220,000. Runs excellent!! I know 300 - 400 kms is allot, but I know they will do it!!

Mazda Engine Life

I rebuilt my B-2000 with 185,000 miles due to a cracked head. I installed a double-core radiator in hopes that this will keep the engine more cool (thus increasing engine life).

I can only HOPE that this new engine will last as long as the engine in my '89 323. I bought the car new, it now has more than 300,000 miles on the ORIGINAL engine. I have done very little to the engine ohter than routine maintenance (plus replaced an alternator and starter at 240,000 miles). On thing I did that was unusual for most people is that I changed the water pump with every SECOND timing belt change. I figured that 120,000 was good for a water pump, and a few more bucks while I have the t-belt off is well worth not having the pump fail while I am on the road!

I have 180k miles on my 89 and still running strong. I am expecting another 100k miles on it with one more timing belt and water pump change. I will change all the rad hoses at 200k and make sure to change the coolant every 50k. Compression on all cylinders right now is 160-165psi.

Re: 2.2L Engine - average life?

It depends on how you drive your rig, and how you maintain it. I drive my rigs hard, and due average maintenaince. I learned thru break downs that I do everything to the max (repairs), and drive like a granny.

89 B2200 KM's

My 89 mazda b2200 now has more then 360 000km and its still goin strong, original engine and everything, although just recently it has started to smoke juring startup but once it warms up it is fine. Planing on replacing the valve seals soon.

A well maintained B2200/2000 should last a good 200-300,000 miles and maybe more.

The biggest weak spots are:

- Feedback carburetion systems fail and cause rich default.
- Cats/exhaust plug due to rich condition.
- Failed HLA due to wear, over revving, poor oil maintenance, cheap oil filters.

- Rocker Arm assembly wear do to oil coking, poor oil maintenance.

-Overheating due to poor cooling system maintenance.

The block in the F2 engine has a high nickle content which also means that poor oil maintenance may cause it to eat up the piston rings. 10w-40 oil is recommended in most places in summer. Warmer climates should use about the same oil in winter, anything lighter than 10w-30 probably shouldn't be ran unless you live in canada.

New the B2200 was rated at about 20 mpg in the city and about 24 mpg on the highway. Most carbureted models in their current age seem to get about 20-22 on the highway and about 18 in the city although I have gotten reports of people getting 25+ miles to the gallon, (most of which seem to have better than average maintenance).

Re: 2.2L Engine - average life?

My 1992 B2200 has 176000 miles. I am the original owner. I had to replace the brakes at 140000 miles and a radiator at 165000 miles. I get 28mpg avg.
