Shifter Question

2001 V-6 Coupe, automatic. Awhile back my sons car started getting harder and harder to shift through the Gears from P to R etc. When we first got the car it seemed a little loose. Now hard to move and doesn't seem to snap into gear like it should. Like the linkage is full of Molasses ! Any thoughts ? and thanks in advance for the help !
