95 Achieva distributor cap ... not required?

Hello,

I recently decided to change my spark plugs and wires instead of getting it done as I had always done before. So I figured I may as well change the distributor cap as well. When I went to the parts store and requested a distributor cap for a V6 95 Achieva, the salesperson called it up on his computer and promptly informed me that the part was "not required". Now, call me crazy, but aren't distributor caps sort of standard? I did notice that the thing that the other ends of the wires plugs into doesn't look like your standart round distributor cap, with all of the terminals in a circle, but rahter they are all in line. Help?

Thanks

Agnes

Welcome to AF

Your car uses a 'coilpack' instead of a distributor. All of the distributor's functions are now electronically controlled, with no moving parts and nothing to wear out or adjust.

Over the last 25 years, almost all auto manufacturers have been shifting over to such electronic engine controls.

So, changing the plugs and wires is all you need to do. Check your owner's manual and see if there is anything else you need to look at as well. If your oxygen sensor has not been changed in the last 50,000 miles or so, consider changing it as well.
