A decent one will cost you more than a used 1992 525i. It is hard to find one that is rust free. They have carburetors, and distributor points, which require monthly maintenance. You could get one with fuel injection, but to fix those you will need a man called Hans that wears a white doctor’s robe and charges a fortune for his services. Those cars are reliable mechanically though. You won’t need to change a water pump every 3 years for example. Compared to the 2002, the 3.0 is a six cylinder luxury coupe, the 2002 is more a 4 cylinder sporty compact.
In my opinion I think that the 3.0 is a really nice model and much nicer than the newer ones. But that is just my opinion. Unless you are really in love with the design of the car, I would say to get a 87 and up BMW with Motronic fuel injection. I have an 84 BMW for eight years and so far all I have done to the engine is change the oil, and spark plugs. |

The E9 series (2500CS, 2800CS, 3.0CS, 3.0CSi and the wild 3.0CSL) is still the best looking coupe that's come out of Munich. Especially in light of that last 6 series.... And the 3.0CSi with manual box and 200hp in a light body (compared to todays cars of similar dimensions) is usefully fast too... I don't know about the US market but here in Europe you can get very good cars from specialist dealers for 12-15000 euros (and terrible ones from scrap dealers for much less!)
