Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Andrea - how did you paint the "brembo" logos on the brakes? They came out so clear. When I try to do it it is not so clear and I end up using the decals - John

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

It's a secret....
Not of course..... I use enamel for the base (gold) and acrylic for the writing. I use a small brush to fill the brembo logo, no problem if it's not neat. After 5-6 minutes with a cotton swab moistened with alchool I remove the paint in excess. At each step I rotate it. It's important the cotton swab is new and tough, if it becames soft it removed the paint into the logo.

Andrea - do you not have a problem with the alcohol removing the enamel paint?

No John, the alcohol removes only the acrylic ( I mean the pink common alcohol)

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Today some time for the rear cowl. I made a mask with tamiya tape and used a masking tape for automotive:

Now I have a good starting point. The black lines are good for the outer edge but not the inner. I have to retouch them.

painted and decalized the fork sensor. I have not good pictures....

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

I have finished to place all the decals (the picture is only for the front cowl) and finished the stand. Now the most delicate job: wash al the fairing parts to prepare them to 2K (hope to not remove some decals)

The wheel are translucent as the white is not solid and white is yellow-off white. Hope you like it...

Great work! Be carefull and dry your decals well befor you clear them with the 2K clear. What brand (2K) do you use?

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

It's an italian brand not well known (I think) : DBS
My only problem is to clean well the surfaces decalized.... sometimes happened some small decal have been removed. Which method do you use to prepare the surface? Do you think is it possible to seal the decal under a thin layer of tamiya clear like x-22 and then cover with 2K?

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Andrea - when I use 2K clear "Zero" paints - I spray "airbrush" a very light coat over the decals first and let them set up and dry well - overnight. Then I follow with thicker "wet" coats after that to achieve the thickness and gloss I want "2-3 coats". Then after that has dried for several days I lightly sand down the decal and paint lines carefully and then clean everything and spray "airbrush" a final wet coat to achieve the finish gloss. As long as I do not apply too heavy of a first coat nothing negative "lifting - crazing" will happen to the decals. - John

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Thank John this could help, but my question is "how do you prepare the decalized surfaces before the 2K?"
There are fingerprints, decal glue etc, so "degrease" the surface is very important. Usually I try to wash the fairing with some cotton and soap but it's easy to scrap the smaller decal...
Anyone have any suggestions?

Well, i usually wash the decalized parts with a soft paintbrush, low warm water and dish wash detergent. I clean them with clear water. I use to blow imedaitlly just air by the airbrush, to dry the parts without water marks! I cover the parts and let them 1 - 2 weeks to dry. If you clearcoat them to soon and they ar still wet under the decals, you get some nasty bubbles. They will disappear in time but you will be forced to stop and wait.
This metod X 22 and after that 2 K clear i read for the first time in my topic :http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul....php?t=1070670
I really don't know how well it works, but i will give this metod a try!

Re: Yamaha Tech 3 + Laguna Seca

Hello
I read your topic and often happened to me to have the 2K peeled off with tape
About x-22... the front yellow fender received this threatment. In the beginning I decided to paint all the fairing with x-22 because of the many decal on them, so I airbrushed the fender and the top tank. But after the first layer the fender was not very glossy so when I used 2K for the rear cowl I decided to give it a try and airbrushed the 2K over the x-22....
The result was fine, no bubble no holes and a smooth surface.
I think I will do the same for the front cowl, as someone had trouble with the chrome decal on it and 2K. So I will try to seal it with x-22 Cross finger!!!
