2008 T4R AWD V8 Front Struts or Just Shocks?

4th Gen T4R Suspension Gurus,

My ride has 102k miles on the original suspension. Rides fine, but I'm wanting to replace the front and rear shocks because we tow a camper and well, it's time.

Rear shocks are very straight forward - shocks alone, looks pretty easy with the right tools.

Question is must I replace the entire front end strut assemblies or can I just replace the shock absorbers without touching the springs?

Planning to purchase Bilsteins; their site indicates 4600 Heavy Duty shocks for the front, but these do not include springs.

Please advise...I've never done any suspension work before...

I would base the decision on the ride height of the front chassis. If the wheels are still about the same height below the upper fender as when new, meaning the springs are still strong, I would just replace the shocks. If the front fender is sagging, like noticeably lower than the rear fender, then I would replace the strut assembly - most likely with the Toyota OEM part since it is not substantially affected by towing as compared with the rear. Many OEM parts are available from Amazon. Just get the part number from the dealer part department with your VIN.

In answer to your question, Yes, you can replace just the shock absorber in the front.

If you tow a heavy load frequently you may consider replacing the rear springs as well. Shocks just smooth out the bumps (so to speak) they don't support the load (truck and camper), that's what the springs are for. You're more likely to need rear springs than front.

Maybe increase the spring rate in the rear. Good catch fourwd1.

Recommendations for upgraded rear shocks? I tow a 5,000 lb. camper with a tongue weight of around 500 lbs. I do use a weight distributing hitch so there's not much appreciable sag in the rear of the vehicle, still with 102K miles with a good portion in towing, I'd like to consider options.
