Scratched car door - cost?

Doe anyone know anything about how much a scratched car door would cost to fix?

My mom was backing out and she scratched some woman's car door. The estimate from her mechanic and it is $1800. WHAT?!

idk what to do. we wouldn't mind if it was $600-1000 but $1800 seems ridiculous.

Your mom did the right thing by admitting to it. You sound as though you wish she had lied about it. If someone damaged something of yours you would want them to be honest. Treat others as you would like to be treated.

$1,850 does sound high, but the picture looks like more than just a scratch. Hard to tell from the picture exactly how much damage.

I assume if your mom was driving a registered vehicle that she has insurance. Have the insurance company handle it, then it won't cost you anymore than your deductible. The insurance company will make the owner get 3-estimates.

Actually, since the insurance claim would be on the other vehicle, the insured would not have a deductable. Deductables in Ny only apply for collision.comp claims and medical. No deductable for property damage to another vehicle. Your premium will go up, nut probably less than what you would pay for the repairs. Also, the insurance company will not make them get 3 repair quotes. The insured's company will send out an isurance adjuster to do their own appraisal of the damage. Repair quotes really won't matter. Insurance companies know what it costs to have repairs done and the adjusters are good at what they do. They are very well trained and normally have body work experience.

It would be in your best interest to let your insurance company handle this if the vehicle is insured (which in NY all registered vehicles have to be). Too many legal problems could arise if you handle this on your own. You pay them every month, let the company earn their keep!!

My guess for the $1800 quote is for a new door skin. Still seems high but then again I see you are in the NYC region where anything under the sun is sky high!
(This information does come from a NYS licensed insurance producer).

I own a shop, it sounds like the est. Was to skin the door, but you probroly could get the door repaired and straightened for around 500-700 is my guess.
