98 Avalon Key won't turn ignition

Had this car for a few years.

Today put the key in the ignition and it won't turn? It will go a little bit so that the electrical will work but that's it.

ALso noticed that the steering wheel is not locked. I can turn it pretty far either way. Usually it locks and I can only move it an inch?

Any suggestions
Thanks
Doug

Hi Doug,
Has this happened again...is it fixed???
Try to ascertain if the steering is locked when you put it in park.
This is usually an interlock issue.

Have you tried a different key? After a few years the key will wear out and not turn the lock.

Re: 98 Avalon Key won't turn ignition

I called AAA and I asked if one of their Locksmith's might be able to help.

They sent one out and he said that I needed to have the ignition rebuilt. So I said go ahead. It cost $200 less the $60 that AAA paid.

The guy said that because my keys were old and worn that they were messing with the tumblers in the ignition.

He was able to make the same key work and made me a new one. He said only use the old ones as a spare for emergencies.

Re: 98 Avalon Key won't turn ignition

So here is my story..

Suddenly key stopped turning. did not even go to the ACC point. tried all the streering stuff. Got the car towed, spend 90 bucks towing, the dealership changed the car keys, charges labor and sent me home with both keys. Told that the old key is badly worn out. Guess what I tried the old key back and it worked after spending all the $$$.. What may be the reason? Wear and tear or something that the car not registering it as Park
