What the tip? Yes any tip size is legal i think, it's just the noise of your exhaust that you can get pulled over for, it's got to be over a set decibel level for it to be illegal, how the cops can tell is beyond me. Their was an interesting article in SCC a few months back about it.

You replaced the muffler with a catylitic converter???

That is wierd. But as long as you didn't remove the original catalytic converter and your noise level is reasonable, then it should be completely legal.

What state are you in?

5 inch tip thats huge not big but huge, all I can say is why??????.The tip will only make a megaphone sound which shouldnt be to loud (illegally loud) but would atract unwanted attention.

And I think by the way he stated as 'weird huh', is thats what hes actually done put on another cat instead of a muffler. You certainly wont be polluting the air but it would be restrictive, maybe not as much as the old chamber muffler but not as nice as a proper flowing system.

Anyway your original or the bloke who told you to do it is:flash:

dude, 5'' is no way legal. the cops don't even allow 3.5''. the biggest you can have is 3". the tone matters as much as the exhaust tip, unless you want to use your car for offroad, then it's ok to have that size. i'm assuming you are talking about a stock exhaust with a phony tip.

A 120mm tip is 4.7" - they're sold by tons of manufacturers (HKS, Apexi, Stillen) as part of street-legal cat-back systems and I see them all the time around here (Southern California). I've never seen any part of the CA vehicle code that says anything about restrictions on the tip size.

Do you have a reference (web site, VC number) for such a code? What state are you in?

then you were had. I might not live in Cali but I have never ever heard of tip size being an issue w/the law in any state. Did the cop hear your intake and think it was your exhaust? It was either that or the cop was thinking how much he hated imports and then you come along.....
