Talking Tamiya 1:12 Honda RC166 with Hobby Design and Tamiya Detail sets

Heres the kit itself, along with the four Tamiya detail sets (spoked/alloy rim wheels, working chain, turned rivets and working forks/PE clutch) and the Hobby Design PE set.

A closer look at the HD set. Appologies for the glare.

I made a simple jig using aluminium tube and a craft-wood base to assemble the cylinders, layer upon layer.

... looks pretty cool once assembled.

unfortunately when compared to the original plastic part from the kit, The PE assembley is slightly more than 1mm thinner. This is really dissaponting and looks like it needs an extra shim (3 instead of the supplied 2) between each fin.
The only way I can see this happening is to buy a second PE set for the extra shims, but at $50+ that wont be happening. I'm going to contact Hobby Design about this issue and see if they respond.

I also had a few issues keeping the Tamiya working chain links intact, I'll use the HD set instead and bend a little sag into it for more realism.

The good news is that the rest of the detail parts all look incredible and should assemble well..... those wheel spokes with seperate n1pples look like quite a challenge though...lol Regards, Dan

Re: Tamiya 1:12 Honda RC166 with Hobby Design and Tamiya Detail sets

Hi,

this is not a model I would buy (I like motobikes, but I prefer the modern ones), but once again I see additional parts from Hobby Design, that don´t fit or/and have bad quality like the 599XX transkit ( http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...bby+Design+599 ) or the wheels ( http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...t=hobby+Design ).

Dan,
You have every right to be frustrated and annoyed with Hobby Design but that won't fix the photoetch and neither will they. You might consider pieces of shim brass in between each layer to build it up to proper height.

K&S Engineering sell a pile of assorted sizes of shim stock for about $3.00 (US). Sizes include .001", .002", .003", .005" etc.

Example: (14) x (.003in) x (25.4mm/in) = 1.07mm.

If your hobby dealer doesn't stock K&S you could try a local machine shop. They use shim stock to adjust for wear on their machines.

Good luck with the build. I'd like to do this one also so I'll be watching.

Re: Tamiya 1:12 Honda RC166 with Hobby Design and Tamiya Detail sets

Here, finally is a minor update.

I haven't picked this kit up many months until I decided to take a look through the box earlier tonight.

I just couldn't resist that gorgeous turned/spoked wheel set and went ahead and started assembley.... about 3 hours later I have the front wheel finished... approx 78 peices.

Hopefully I'll now feel inspired to continue on with this build.

Regards, Dan

Dan,

I will also closely monitor this assembly, because I have the same sets of PE that you are using. So far it's going very well ...

Re: Tamiya 1:12 Honda RC166 with Hobby Design and Tamiya Detail sets

good point re the height of cylinders as if not right height the assembly will not reach the top hanging points or the rear mounts. good on you for contacting, but how many have ditched a great kit because of omission of parts

Hi, looking good...

Your picture from the assembled wheel does not give justice for the scale ! boy those whees and the spokes are tiny !

I have just started my kit and i will use sthe kit motor, but i also ordered the chain kit and the wheel kit.
