help with replacing struts

Hello,

I dont really want to take my car into the shop to get the struts replaced and plan on doing it myself. Does anyone know where I can get information on how to replace the struts? How long does it normally take and do I need any special tools?? If I do need a special tool, someone please let me know so I can rent it from the auto shop.

Thanks, later

By the way, I was thinking about replacing my wheel bearing at the same time. any info on this topic will be appreciated also.

I have a 1990 Celica GT, FWD and need to replace the struts in the Front wheels.

Re: help with replacing struts

well, I have a rwd celica that i just changed the struts on, and it was easy. it will be harder for you with fwd, but ether way you will need some tools. 1st a strut spring compresser thats the biggie! you relly should have someone around that has done this before. i did it my self and almost periced my belly butten with a spring. the center nut(on the tower) CANNOT be removed before the spring is compressed!! or it can hurt you alot! I suggest that you speek to a pro and then decide if you can do it without help. I just got off work, so if this posting is totaly incoherant, please just atribute it to that. good luck and BE CARFULL.

Re: help with replacing struts

As someone that does the installs every week I would take oldblue's advice. Find a professional that has done it before and doesn't care for you to maybe help or watch. We typically charge about $200 flat rate and it can take anywhere from 2-4 hrs depending on if you have the right tools or not. Also a hydraulic lift is always nice. Those things have made my life alot easier, I can tell you that. Like Oldblue said strut/spring compressor is a big must. Just be ready to get dirty!! Have fun and good luck.

How did you do it for your struts blue? Since I'll probably need replacing my struts and my celica is an 85 so it's rwd as well.

Struts

Well, I just replaced the front and rear struts on my 1991 Celica GT. If you are doing your front struts they are alot easier then your rear ones. Which are you doing?
