PIT3523: Water Leak from the Roof Onto the Left/Right Floor - keywords joint molding panel pillar seal seam top - (Apr 6, 2005)
Subject:Water Leak From The Roof Onto The Left/Right Floor Models:2004-2005 Chevrolet Colorado Pick Up 2004-2005 GMC Canyon Pick Up The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI. <A href="http://gsi.xw.gm.com/newsi/showDoc.do?docSyskey=1644313&from=sm#N65560">Condition/Concern: Water may leak from the headliner or water may be noticed on the drivers or passengers floor area. Water may enter the ditch molding seam. This type of leak can either saturate the headliner or travel into the seam, down the A-pillar area and travel on the floor to either the drivers or passenger side. <A href="http://gsi.xw.gm.com/newsi/showDoc.do?docSyskey=1644313&from=sm#N65569">Recommendation/Instructions: Follow water leak diagnosis and repair under General Information, Waterleaks in eSI. A possible source of the water leak may be from an open left or right roof weld seam under the ditch molding at the windshield. To repair this leak, it will be necessary to remove the ditch molding and seal the roof weld seam with seam sealer near the windshield. This repair should be done on both sides if the leak has been isolated to the roof panel area. Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information. |

Thanks gmtech1 for the quick reply. Any thoughts on where I might find diagrams or other info to guide me through this diagnosis?

Re: 05 Colorado leak on drivers side only
Yep. Would want to do that with the ditch molding off to pin point the leak if that is the culprit. Any trick to getting the molding off without destroying it?

Re: 05 Colorado leak on drivers side only
UPDATE: Lifted front end of ditch molding at windshield, found lots of debris where ditch meets windshield frame. Cleaned w alcohol and q tips, applied generous amt of silicone in junction and in crevice on either side of ditch. Will post results after a couple of rainy days.. BTW, the ditch molding is held in with a mild adhesive, just pried end up gently and reglued with silicone... Thanks for everyones advice... Now, know anything about window motor bushings in a 2002 towncar?

Re: 05 Colorado leak on drivers side only
Update on 2005 Colorado... leak under front left fender, where cowl, pillar and door jamb come together. leak reproduced by running trickle of water over the top of upper door hinge, from the base of the WS pillar. Water entering cab FROM BETWEEN TWO SHEETS OF METAL that make up the lip that the upper door gasket and the interior finish piece attach to... and is obviously not sealed where the pillar and door jamb meet. siliconed everything I could reach and still had the leak. Took off the fender and hood, masked everything else and loaded the area with spray rubber undercoating. Gave it 5 full coats and allowed 2 hrs drying time between, over 2 days. Front leak sealed, no water with an hour of the hose on the correct spot... Never saw water coming from between sheets of metal that are supposedly sealed...
