Automotive Technician career question

I'm going to be attending a school called (UTI) Universal Technical Institute. The tuition is 23,000 total about 1 year of training. I was wondering if you guys think it's worth all that money, 23 G's to become a mechanic and if have any other advice that would be of help would be great thanks

23k to become a mechanic is a waste of money.

If you were to invest 23k into becoming an Auto TECHNICIAN, I would say its a good deal.

Re: Automotive Technician career question

If you get certified as a Mechanic and you go to UTI you are in good shape. My uncle is certified and he pushes $110k a year easy. But if you want to be a mechanic you can easly just take ASE certification classes and get a job that way for a lot less money. But I'm sure UTI and a Certification will look really good on a resume.

Re: Automotive Technician career question

So what exactly is the difference between a mechanic and technician, and pro & cons of both? I am also thinking of attending UTI, but didnt know it was $23K a year!

A Technician is a highly trained and skilled professional

A mechanic isn't

Re: Automotive Technician career question

Just jumping back over from the other posting----MIIT (www.miiteducation.com) is where I decided to go, my total cost at UTI was 29 something, at MIIT it's 12. The shop is small compared to UTI, but the training is the same, and I'm staying home.

Re: Automotive Technician career question

Holy crap I finaly got an auto response to this thread. I didn't think anyone replied to it.

Anyways I didn't enroll because of lack of funds FA provided like 17,000 and I had to fork up the rest which I couldn't do.

Referring back to the question though, I did mean an auto Technician not a mechanic.

110k seems like alot of dough for an Auto Technician, he must work in a factory or something?

Anyways my next stop is going to be New England Tech Automotive it's around 15k I believe, same hands on training etc.

Yea but a Mechanic is trained to work with hundreds of differnet cars were a technician only works with One make. And the 110K a year is because he is the Head mechanic at a popular shop in town.

you are partially correct
A mechanic works on cars

A TECHNICIAN FIXES them
