Re: Thinking of buying a FUSION - anything I should know?

I have driven the auto V6 and it was very nice. It had plenty of power, I don't see why any person should complain about the power of it. The interior was very nice and the car looked great. A family member purchased it a couple of months back and haven't had a single complaint. I sat in a manual car (bear in mind it was not a test drive) and I fooled with the shifter, it didn't seem awkward to me. Maybe the competition is better but I see nothing to complain about. It was nicer than the 96 Escorts shifter. By the way my parents have owned a 96 escort since about 98 and haven't had any problems with it. They bought a second hand 99 taurus from my grand parents and are now thinking of selling the taurus in favor of the escort it was supposed to replace. 96 escort was a great car.

Jeff:
Sounds like you are a kindred spirit. Our 98 manual Escort wagon has been flawless for 100K miles and we like the 35 mpg on trips.

We would go with another manual Escort wagon with side air bags but they are "going away" according to Ford reports.

So the next choice was the Fusion 4 cyl, manual. Good reliability reports from Consumer Reports and "slightly more car" as you say.

We have had it 3 weeks and 1000+ miles. No problems. It is quite a bit more powerful than the Escorts even though it weighs more. Seems to me the larger engine is not needed unless it is planned to race and tow. However, the Ford Fusion manual simply states "do not use for towing". No one at UHaul, where we put the hitch on, had any idea why. He said he had put 10 or 12 hitches on Fusions with no problems. My guess is they are worried about the automatic transmission durability when towing.

We took it on a trip to Arizona with the first tank of gas. It did 32 mpg and 31 mpg. (Topped off measured, not just where the shutoff triggers)

It is noticeably quieter than the Escort, easier to listen to quiet passages on the MP3/CD player and carry on conversations. We measured the sound level before buying it as 66 dBA at 70mph on concrete. This compares favorably with the measurement we took on Father-In-Law's Mercedes 240 as 64 dBA at 65 mph on concrete and my notes have a Car and Driver test result of a 2002 Lexus at 66 dBA at 70 mph, surface unknown. (Asphalt is quieter)

Hope that helps.....
Wally

Now if someone can just tell me something about that Ignition Kill Alarm setup, Theft Avert anti theft system. So far no manual, I'll keep bugging the dealer.

Re: Thinking of buying a FUSION - anything I should know?

I test drove both the manual and automatic I4's yesterday.

I found nothing awkward about shifting the manual. The clutch is effortless and the way the shifter is positioned you can basically just flick your wrist with your arm resting on the center console.

The auto is slower to respond, but that's expected.

Both were relatively quiet at 75 on the highway, but the r's are up around 3k or so. An instance where a sixth gear would be welcome, though that's only available on the V6.

My only complaint, and it wouldn't keep me from buying one, is that the engine is a bit noisy when revving. Once at speed, things quiet down, but you definitely know what the engine is doing the rest of the time.

I didn't bother with the V6's because I'm after the fuel economy of the four.

Hope that helps.

The Ford Fusion is the most dependable new Ford you can buy no matter what engine or package you buy! I work at a large Ford dealer as a tech and have not seen any come in foar anything but maintenence.

Re: Thinking of buying a FUSION - anything I should know?

I see the IIHS has a crash test report out on the Fusion and they note improvements made in the structure after Jan 07 to beef up frontal impact injury to the driver. So before you buy one off the lot, check the manufacture date sticker just inside the driver door. Ours says 09/06

Re: Thinking of buying a FUSION - anything I should know?

I’ve got a 06 SE manual and I love it. The only problem I have with shifting is when I go in reverse I miss it some time (operator error) so I don’t know what the consumer report is talking about, but you should test drive one and see if you have any problems with shifting. Even though it’s a 4 cylinder the SE has great pick up and ok top end. I test drove the V6 too, but it kind of felt like it was a little sluggish off the line. If you want the added looks you can get the I4 SEL with dual exhaust, center dash clock, climate control, fog lights and daytime running lights other than that I believe the SE and SEL are the same (unless you get the V6 SEL) and you always have the option of getting the sun roof and the 8 speaker audiophile stereo, but you can always stay with the 6 speaker 6 disc in-dash CD player. But I would wait until they release the 2008 models to see if they may change some aspects of the car. I don’t know what you’re looking for but ford might be coming out with a coup this year

Smile Re: Thinking of buying a FUSION - anything I should know?

I own a 06 Milan, which I'm told is basically the same as Ford Fusion. We bought it used and have done a few things to it so far. The dealer that sold it to me washed the engine prior to sale and when I went to pick car up it would hardly run. Water was standing in spark plug wells causing an electrical short. So don't hose engine off around the spark plugs!
Also, at 33k miles it's going to need brakes and at least 1 brake rotor and a set of tires. Tires are making an awful noise at highway speed and appear to have flat spots on at least one of them. The brakes are worn down to where the caliper rubs against the rotor, making another unpleasant noise. Engine is 4 cyl which makes some noise on acceleration but automatic trans works smooth and is quiet. Gets about 32 miles per gallon. Car is not as comfortable as the 2000 Buick Century I traded off for it and that's kinda hard to get used to.

Re: Thinking of buying a FUSION - anything I should know?

Bought an 07 I4 for my daughter a few months ago. Low points: rudamentry instrument cluster, lots of engine noise on acceleration, overall look and feel of interior plastic trim. High points: reasonable mileage (27.5 highway, city-haven't checked), nice ride, comparative stellar maintenance/recall history, and I couldn't find a rattle anywhere. Overall I'd give it a 7 or 8.

Last week daughter took it to her dealership complaining of a noise at tip in on acceleration. Dealership found a leaking water pump. Changed it on the warranty. Noise is gone.
