Part and selling question
Hi all,
I haven't posted on here in quite some time. Over the past couple of years I have had many problems with the VR4 - I bought it with high mileage and brought it from Texas into a cold January in Canada, so it's reasonable. I have two questions. 1. I need ball joints but the dealer says you have to buy the control arm and they want me to pay $570 (Cdn) each, so over $1,200 taxes in plus install. Are they correct you can't buy them seperate? 2. I will do anything to sell this car and get one newer. It has 165,000 miles, grind in 2nd gear, needs the ball joints and brakes to pass MVI. I have $1,000 in BRAND NEW tires for it, an MBC (not installed) and new spark plugs (not installed). Over the course of the couple years I've done stuff like clutch, driveshaft, etc. Other than that, the standard cool VR4 stuff and power. Any idea what I can get for it? $4000? Any feedback is much appreciated. I need to get back on these forums, I forgot how much fun it is to surf them! Side note - I tried to drive the thing directly from my house to have it inspected the other day and got caught on the way, ticketed, and towed. I'm going to try the court thing though. Have a great day.

Re: Part and selling question
i just replaced my ball joints yesterday. i bought them individually (just the ball joints, not the whole lower control arm) from a guy on 3si. user CustomShiftBoot sells ball joints for our cars for $99 shipped for a pair. here is one of his many threads. he had a sale over the summer, but still, $99 shipped for a pair is a very good deal. they are OE quality ball joints, so don't think by the price that they are crappy knock-offs.
as for removal/installation, this thread has many pictures and describes in detail how to do it. its actually pretty easy, and you only need 2 special tools (pickle fork & ball joint remover/installer kit) that you can rent at your local auto parts store.

Re: Part and selling question
I bought my car in Illinois w/ 165k on it in immaculate condition, other than the milege, and i have 2nd gear syncro out in tranny, jus like you, paid 3500 so, i'd say you could get somewhere in the ballpark of 3,200 to 3,800 fo it... KBB says its worth almost 5k but good luck getting someone to pay 5k for a car w/ over 150k miles...

Re: Part and selling question
A "notorious" dick. I'll have my day in court.
Thank you so much for the first response, that will help me out incredibily! If I can only get $3,200 I might as well just keep it and do a couple things once it's paid off. I waxed it last night and it looks good again. We'll see. Thanks again.

Re: Part and selling question
Here's the rundown on the car:
The exhaust is stock and never changed, but has no problem passing MVI. I've had it done a couple of times. Also, I'm in New Brunswick (so eastern Canada). Red w/tan Leather Power driver's seat & side bolsters Digital climate control w/AC 6 CD changer Crank and removable sunroof Power w/l You probably know this stuff: 3.0L V6 TT, AWD, AW steering, 300hp, 307ft/lb I have new Bosch platinum plugs and an MBC good for 14.5psi on stock internals I'm told (around 350ish hp?) (both not installed). Any questions just ask.

Re: Part and selling question
damn it, this sux, i have two choices, one if u sell ur car, i'd try to get it(i'm in new jersey) or get a car i've wanted for 2yrs a porsche 944.
i have a 92 stealth tt, so i mean it's not like i dont have ur type of car more or less, and the porsche is something i've loved since i was 5. and both would b selling for about the same. the other big thing for the porsche, its all of 10miles from me dont worry i think out load all the time. and of course this would all b dependant on u actually selling it

Re: Part and selling question
yea but the fact that i have the stealth, kinda makes me lean towards the porsche, i want a car i can drive everyday.
thet porsche has about 101k on it. and it fits the idea of something that is fun to drive. and porsche parts here are easy to find, i'm buying it from a guy who only works on porsches so it's in mint condition

Re: Part and selling question
It's funny, I drove by New Jersey two weeks ago on vacation (albeit in my Mazda6). I should have dropped it off to ya!
