Need Oil And Oil Filter Recommendation

HI ALL,
On a '99 S 4x4 Auto with 60K miles:
Should I use an OEM oil filter, or do you have a preference.

What type of oil also, I have always had a preference for castrol. I plan on keeping the truck forever, perhaps I should switch to a synthetic.

Would love your feedback, thanks!

The key to oil changes is to do them every 3k or sooner. As for filters stay away from Fram. I use AC Delco.

I too like AC delco, purolator, WIX, or anything by champion labs (STP, supertech, advance auto + many private lables are champion labs filters) I've run everything from amsoil, royal purple to mobil one, mobil drive clean & havoline in my rodeo. Currently I'm running carquest auto house brand oil (valvoline) 5w-30 and a carquest filter. In realilty, any low cost oil will do fine by you for 3K mile changes. Havoline is supposed to be one of the best low cost oils of the day. It's your money- & it certainly wont do any harm to your engine, but using synthetic oil & dumping it every 3000 miles is absolutely pointless. If you really want to get crazy with oil & filter info, check out this site: http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi

Hey Rodeo02, thanks for the oil site you recommended.

I saw you posted there a lot as JTK, good posts on the 3.2 litre rodeo engine problem. also some good posts on what weight oil did best for power/mpg.

So I ask. I am in So Calif, driving a '99 v6 autu 4x4, 60K miles, and not yet burning oil (cross those fingers). I am taking over oil cange maintenance from sears to save money. I went with the purolator oil filter.

There is a good sale on valvoline all climate (90 cents/quart), I thought I'd use that, any thoughts on it, OR which weight might be best for the So Calif climate. Sears has been using castrol 5w30, and i have good power, and again, not yet burning through oil. I wat this engine to last a LONG time!!!

Thanks a bunch!!! And if anyone else would like to comment, please do!

Hey man you blew my cover!(all good). Valvoline 5w-30 will be fine for you at a 3000mi change interval. Some over at the BITOG site have shown that valvoline has a weak additive pack, but it still does fine for 3-5Kmile OCI's. 10w-30 *might* hold up better for you in long stretches of HOT weather. It's nice to stick with name brand oil since you can look up most of their specs online & you pretty much know what you are getting. In reality, the least expensive (API rated per your application) motor oil that you can buy, changed regularly, will make your engine outlast the truck!

Re: Need Oil And Oil Filter Recommendation

I use Havoline 10W-30 with best results! I use to use Bosch oil filters, then once or twice used AC Delco and STP - had horrible ticking sound with first couple initial starts after an oil change with both AC Delco and STP.

Gave me a bad vibe, so I switched back to Isuzu OEM filters, wish I had used them all along - truck seems to run MUCH better with higher consistent pressure.

Based on what they say at the BITOG site, regular 'ol havoline is really good stuff. Just a knotch below a hydrocracked synthetic. Bosch filters are really well constructed, but too restrictive for some applications- I guess from their super fine filtering media.

Go with the synthetic. I recommend Amsoil not just because I am a dealer but I have gone 40,804 miles on a oil change in a Honda civic . http://www.synthetic-lubricants.com/40,804 Mile Oil Change.htm Amsoil is the only one that guarantees their oil for 25,000 miles or one year and 35,00 with their 0w-30 oil
