Installing thread inserts.

I have been looking at kits to install thread inserts in triton engines. The cheaper kits look as if they are installing 3/4 inch inserts with full thread.
As they come with 8 inserts I'm assuming it will require all new spark plugs with full threads. If this is correct what part number spark plug are they using.
The other kits use an insert that will accept original equipment spark plugs.
I can use a piece of plastic tubing and wrap it with duck tape to make a vacuum attachment which OTC has in their kit. CTA 98140 Tool is probably the cheapest. Matco has one for $189.00 OTC kit runs around $285.00
Time cert is around $400.00
As I no longer have a shop it would be for use at home. Otherwise I would buy a better kit probably OTC.

Re: Installing thread inserts.

I'm also quite interested in the spark plug repair kits. I've looked at some of the cheaper ones and I'm not to thrilled about them. Some are Helicoil kits and even Helicoil says not to use Helicoil repairs for spark plug thread repair.
The repair recognized by Ford consists of an anodized thread insert, however I don't think I'd wan't to try that one http://www.locknstitch.com/sparkpluginserts.htm
Timesert looks to be next best and evidently it's a reliable, but expensive repair for a do it yourselfer. I plan on doing a maintenance to ensure the plugs are tight before I take it on any trips. I believe the plugs come loose from heat cycles (start ups) and time so hopefully it wont happen to us again. Last one was 1300 miles from home, not a nice feeling.
I did Google and found a OTC kit however no price on it and couldn't find anything on Matco.
I'd be interested on reading anything you can come up with on this topic as eventually I'll get a kit just to be on the safe side when traveling.

Cheers Willis

Re: Installing thread inserts.

Go to http://www.promarengine.com/ Click on products it shows two different types of inserts. It also shows the tools to install them. I kind of like the cheaper type of repair which takes another plug with full threads.
Go to http://www.matcotools.com/ Click on new and exclusive the kit is at the bottom the price has dropped to $149.00 The CTA 98140 Tool is $205.00.
Look at ADT kit I like that it has a guide.
I bought a set of 8 CTA inserts for $20.00. I think I might have the other tools. For the tap I think wrap tape around the socket to drive it or fabricate a bushing for holding the tap steady. From past experience this is the reason many of the repairs fail. I will let you know what the bushing looks like.
If you are interested in a OTC kit Send me a private email with your email address and I will send you a link.
Type in thread inserts on ebay. The tapered inserts are $12.00 and the full thread are $2.25 If you work in a garage you could price doing all 8 with new plugs or doing one and he may come back.

Re: Installing thread inserts.

OK a little more research. The 3/4 thread inserts would be the best bet for the Triton engines. The AWSFE22E (half thread) has been replaced by the AGSF22WM which is a full thread spark plug and can take advantage of using all the threads in the insert. However the kits would have to be capable of installing taper seat inserts.

TIME-SERTŪ REPAIR KIT $210 Part No. 4412E is not for the Triton modulars but is usefull for the V4 2Lt and other engines down to the Ford Escort 1.8 Lt.etc The Triton 2 valve engines and the Triton 3 valve engines seem to require different kits, 5553 for the 2 valve and 3221 for the 3 valve where a little more metal has to be removed. However I seem to understand that the "Big Sert" will fix all. It's for oversized repairs or repairing threads that were fixed before. I also see that the aluminum inserts are now available from Timesert, most likely to get Ford repair approval. I didn't know this so that's more studying for me. Timesert is an easier repair to do than the Lock & Stitch. However it's still in the $400 to $450 range, and as something to carry around in the glove compartment for "a just in case" happening that's a bit much. The other kits look like they're worth checking out, PM will be on it's way soon as I figure out how to do it on this forum .

Nah just an old guy who has been doing his own work since the 50's however next year well be on an extended trip lasting 2 1/2 to 3 months (maybe longer) on the road. It's a motor home with a 6.8 V10 and it's not a nice feeling looking for repairs in an area strange to one's self.

Cheers Willis

Re: Installing thread inserts.

I got the inserts from autopart and they are bored so the original plugs are used. I found a recoil kit on ebay and got it for $20.00 + $16.00 shipping. It had four inserts. Recoils kit Matco, and CTA's kit have the same part number and look the same. Matco's price varies and Recoils is the cheapest.
http://www.autopart.com/TOOLS/TOOLSM...ol/T_98140.htm
This gives a good look at the tool. Plug in search 98141 and it shows the tap set. Plug in search 98149 and it shows inserts. The tap takes a 3/4 socket and I don't think it will fit in the hole. A very well worn 18mm may work. The tool for the tap is very thin and I'm sure rubs the sides. The man I bought welded a 9/16 socket on top as he said the drive tool hit the injector rail. He must have used a lath to center it properly a professional weld job. I'm sure the mfg. made it this way on purpose as I'm sure some would use an air ratchet.
