1996 Ram V10 engine nocking/ticking

I am hoping somebody can help me figure out the problem with my truck. I have a 1996 Ram with the V10 that only has 10,000 miles since it was replaced by Dodge. 7 years has passed since that shortblock warranty job. It now has a tick/knock that I cant seem to locate? I changed the lifters and one push rod since is was a little bent and put it all back together. Still getting the same thing - nothing has changed and I am looking for somebody who may have the fix?

Thank you for any advice!!

Pull one spark plug wire at a time while the engine is running and see if the noise is coming from 1 particular cylinder. Put the pulled wire back on before going to the next wire.

I did pull each wire one at a time and the knock never stopped? I also heard it could be the timing belt tensioner?

Good work.
I don't think the V-10 has a timing belt, most likely a timing chain but they can be noisy too.
I think I'd be pulling the valve covers off and check for loose rockers and or broken valve springs.
Does the engine otherwise run smooth?

Re: 1996 Ram V10 engine nocking/ticking

I got under truck with thesescope and could really hear the knocking toward the middle of the oil pan? My guess the rod bolts have loosened up. I only have 10000 miles on the engine since Dodge did the long block replacement. I called a service manager at Dodge dealership today, I request that they drop the oil pan and see if something has come loose. I am wondering if they will honor anthing if it was something done wrong at assembly. The new engine was done on the truck in 2006. I figure best to let them drop the oilpan to inspect instead of me? The last thing I want them thinking is that I did something.

The truck runs smooth but once warm the knock appears and follows with idle speed?

I should have bought a diesel when I ordered a new truck.

How much warranty is on that engine?

Re: 1996 Ram V10 engine nocking/ticking

Its not under warranty because I let the time lapse. This morning I started just to listen - no noise but after warm up it started knocking again. I told the service manager that I want him to be there when they drop oil pan. I think a rod bolt came loose but since I never dropped the oil pan - I think it would be better if dealership dropped it.

Thanks for your message

Re: 1996 Ram V10 engine nocking/ticking

if a rod bolt came loose the rod would probably have come though the pan or block by now. its more likely you have a rod or main bearing knock, they will get louder as engine warms up and oil gets thinner. hopefully its something else making the noise or engine will have to come out and be rebuilt again

Yup. a loose rod bolt will knock all the time.
Piston slap from a worn piston will be more pronounced as the engine warms up too.
Do you have the correct viscosity oil in the engine?

Boy am I wrong about that, the piston slap is more pronounced when it's cold, before heat expands it.
The forged pistons in the early Z28's were noisy until the engine/pistons warmed up due to extra piston to cylinder wall clearances.

Thumbs down Re: 1996 Ram V10 engine nocking/ticking

Well after taking it to local Dodge, I got a teardown fee of 465 on top of the 165 diagnostic to tear it down fee. I am pulling my truck out of there tonight. They still think its a rocker or spring.

Re: 1996 Ram V10 engine nocking/ticking

Well I am taking my truck to have the upper end torn down. The knock is still there after 5000 miles and 2 years later. Changed oils and spark plugs. Need to have them tear it down and figure this out. Keep you posted..
