Taurus, stalls and overheats

I have a 1999 ford tTaurus that keeps stalling. Out mechanic can't figure out why. He said it's not the fuel pump because when they bang on the bottom of the gas tank it won't start, and now it keeps overheating and dying out. Brought it back to the mechanic and he says every time they start it there is no problem and they leave it running but it's not overheating. Every time we bring it home it stalls and overheats. Any thoughts? I know as soon as we bring it home it's going to stall and overheat again

Re: Taurus, stalls and overheats

Welcome to the forum!

The shop really banged on the tank rather than checking fuel pressure? Doesn't seem like much of a shop if they don't have the tools to check fuel pressure.... Did they check the operation of the cooling fan(s) for the overheating condition?

Do you have any evidence as to why it stalls, such as lack of fuel, lack of spark, or seizure from overheating? What is the condition of the oil?

Re: Taurus, stalls and overheats

They said when they put it on the machine the fuel pump is putting out the correct amount of fuel. They did check the cooling fan and it is working. They checked the oil as well. Problem is when the car stalls by the time we get it to the shop it starts so they can't see the problem. They have had it for a week and they start it and let it run and of course it never stalls or overheats, but the minute we pick it up again we're back to square one. Just talked to them and they are going to flush the radiator. Let me know if you have any other thoughts and thanks for responding

Crankshaft position sensor??? Might be bad...causing the stalling to happen....also maybe causing the DIS to be seeing full timing advance causing the engine to overheat.

Re: Taurus, stalls and overheats

Tony's correct, the intermittent stalling could be caused by an intermittent Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. I don't know that it would be very likely to cause the timing to change enough to cause an overheating condition, but it's also possible the stalling and overheating are two different issues.

There's a chance an intermittent CKP sensor would either trip a diagnostic code, or set a pending code. Did the shop check for diagnostic codes?
