I have the same car, same problem. I have been told the problem is with either a broken vacuum line, or a clogged EGR valve. I plan to check on these this week and figure out next steps.
Anybody with some ideas, please advise! Thx... BD7Js |

Check throttle postioning sensor?, or speed sensor? check error codes immediately after problem occurs (computer may clear codes after driving for a time).
If your rebuilt tranny has a warranty bring it back and have it checked out!! |

Shutter, lurching, surging
Took my 2001 Mercury Sable to the local shop and let him drive it. My car would sometimes drive ok but on occassion would surge or shutter. I would watch the RPMs change and it looked like the transmission may be trying to shift in and out of overdrive or even an ignition or fuel problem. I did the cheaper stuff first. Replaced fuel filter - No change. Replaced Spark Plugs - No change. Replaced Plug Wires - No change. My mechanic road tested it and he thought it was the Torque Converter. I asked how much it would cost and he said maybe $6.00. When we got back at the shop he brought a tube of Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx and put it in the transmission stick tube. Within 1 mile of driving the shutter was gone.

Re: irrattic idle, lurching, surging
I had my inline air filter changed on my 2001 Sable Duratec 24v at the Ford dealer and they broke the plastic throttle cable grommet that is next to the air filter. Several days later it caused the car to accellerate rapidly and I had to pull over and turn off the ignition. Turned it on again and rpms went very high and damaged my tranny to the tune of $900 for blown seals.
