this is about my corolla

I wasn't sure whether to put this with my sentra questions since its a different car. I'm not sure if its the head gasket or prehaps the head is cracked.

I'd rather change the head gasket or get a new head or what ever I need to do rather than junk the car before I go getting that as my answer lol. How do you tell if the head is cracked? Does the head gasket even looked messed up in any way? What else causes white smoke out the tail pipe immiedatly and slowly dies off. It has an overheating problem as well. I don't think the radiator is cracked. This is on a 91 corolla 5 speed.

Do you have a digital still camera you can take a nice sharp clear photo of the head, block and each side of the gasket?

The video is to low a resolution and to blurry to really see if there is any sign of blow by.

Re: this is about my corolla

My dad was out looking with me to. When I watched the guy take my engine apart last time the head gasket blew, there was a gap at the spot between first and second cylinder on the head gasket. This one looks just fine. There aren't any marks on it. The oil doesn't really have a milky consistancy to it. It seems watery to me. The underside of the head didn't have any oil on it. I'm guessing the valves in front and the ones in back are made differently. The ones along the back were black and smooth whereas the ones in front were more rough. How can you tell if the head is cracked? Is there an obvious crack or is it small? Is there anything that could happen in the cooling system that acts like a blown head gasket? It gave a big puff a white smoke out the back like it burned up the coolant. It had the overheating problem and that was probably because there wasn't any coolant in it after that even though i put water in it. But I don't know what would have caused all the coolant to burn up on the spot like that. I also noticed before it did that, the car was failing to put out any heat from the heater. Oh and can you tell me how to post a picture on here? We took some pictures of the underside of the head.

Often there can be a very small crack in the head gasket that is very hard to spot unless you really know what your looking for.

You either need to get an experienced mechanic to check it, or try and post some high res photos for us to look at.

Cracks in the head are often impossible to spot by eye. The head needs to be test by a professional head specialist.

It refuses to let me post any pictures.

Since I work at Walmart in the tire and lube, Im going to take my head gasket to everyone there and have them see. Then I got to stop by autozone to take an item back so Ill have them check it out also.Ill try to get some pictures up tonight of it since they seem to look better than the video.

Re: this is about my corolla

Is it a bad thing to resurface a head? Or is this like fix a flat. Just for temporary use? If its best to just get another head from a junkyard than thats what Ill do. I was told I probably wouldn't be able to see a crack if the head is damaged.

See what the machine shop says. Resurfacing is common practice. If it needs cut, have it cut. Even if you get another head, still have it checked and cut if needed.
